John Steinbeck Research Paper
Throughout the history of American Literature writers have injected their personal lives in to their, John Steinbeck is no exception. John Steinbecks characters come directly from his travels and experiences. John Steinbecks writing would not have been as descriptive or as realistic without this personal interjection. His contribution to American Literature is unique and offers a fresh approach to this art form. A few of the works which contain his personal experiences are Of Mice and Men, East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath. American Literature has been greatly influenced by John Steinbeck and his unique characters, style, subjects and descriptive writing. Two of the awards he won from the book, The Grapes of Wrath, he wrote in 1939 was the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and National Book Award for Fiction. John had also served as a war correspondent during World War II and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He moved to New York City for a short amount of time, where he found work as a construction worker and a newspaper reporter, but then came back to California to take a job as a caretaker in Lake Tahoe, California. On the 20th of December in 1968 John Steinbeck died of a heart disease in his home located in New York, New York. 1 John Steinbeck like many authors interjected his personal into his works. For example, in the story The Grapes of Wrath, the main character has a problem similar to the author And Granma raised a shrill voice, Preacher You got a preacher Go git him. Well have a grace. Having come in contact with these men, he would have known what they thought and how they felt, for example, two characters in the novel, George and Lennie are discussing their future Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They dont belong no place. They come to a ranch an work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know theyre poundin their tail on some other ranch. They aint got nothing to look ahead to. 3 As one can easily see, this quote points out that John Steinbeck encountered people, whom he had worked on the ranch with, had no one to rely on except themselves, which points out their loneliness, and their dream about their own future, even though it wont come true. Even though Steinbeck was around all of this dreaming and loneliness, he took action and became successful in life, with the support of his wife, Carol. Furthermore, Steinbeck had a drinking problem and he shows it through the character George in the novel, Of Mice and Men. When John Steinbeck was drinking, he cheated on one of his wives. These themes are inserted when Lennie aggravates George, in the beginning of the novel, after they run away from the people chasing them from Weed Why, I could stay in a cat house all
