Rawls’ Character Values

 Loyalty – His principles first held the commitment that “each person is to have an equal right to…basic liberties.” (Rawls, 1971)

 Self-knowledge/ empathy – He theorized that “social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are…reasonably expected to be to everyone’s advantage.”
(Rawls, 1971) He believed that “taking up this point of view, we are to imagine ourselves in the position of free and equal persons…” (Freeman, 2012)
 Honesty - His original position, a feature of the “justice as fairness” concept, “is designed to be a fair and impartial point of view that is to be adopted in our reasoning about fundamental principles of justice.” (Freeman, 2012)

Admirable Qualities
 Courage – “After completing his first degree a semester early, Rawls
[enlisted in] the US army and, as an infantryman, saw action in New
Guinea and the Philippines.” (Rogers, 2002)
 Resilience - Rawls lost two younger brothers during his childhood. They
“died of diseases contracted from [John].” In 1928, Bobby died after contracting diphtheria and the following winter Tommy contracted
John’s pneumonia and died. (Pogge, 2007)

 Influence – “John Rawls was one of the most influential political philosophers of the twentieth century.” He also “has enjoyed the rare privilege of being read by a broad range of non-philosophers, especially students of politics and law.” (Cohen, 2008)
 Dedication – John’s dedication to his work is evident in his numerous articles and publications, most notably A Theory of Justice in 1971 and
Justice as Fairness: A Restatement published in 2001.

    Douglass's slave narrative reflects a search for his identity. Douglass did not know his origins, and age. He was a slave, and considered a piece of property that lack understanding, but with his narrative he proves the contrary. His narrative proves that he was a human being that have many capacities to succeed and demonstrated that African-Americans were capable to learn just like anybody else.     The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, was the first of the three autobiographies that Frederick Douglass wrote himself. It’s a story about slavery and the meaning of freedom of the antebellum America. According to The Free Dictionary, Slavery is defined as the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune (freedictionary.com). Frederick Douglass’s book is about a bondage he obtained since birth; a slave for life. He was separated from his mother, Harriet Bailey, at birth and knew his father was white male. He lived on the “Great House Farm” plantation for his younger years; this is where he saw his first violent act towards a slave. Douglass went through many ups and downs. At the age of seven, he was moved to another house where he first learned reading and writing. However, He was beaten brutally so he can be “broken” into a good disciplined slave. Douglass describes many elements in his narrative; Douglass explains how slaveholders were able to sustain themselves with their actions. Frederick describes the ways the slaves stayed where they were and did not attempt to escape. He also addresses a number of myths created by slaves and slaveholders that he wishes to prove wrong.     Down syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation. It is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. Chromosomes contain sequences of DNA called genes that represent the genetic information that exists within a cell. Twenty-three distinctive pairs of chromosomes which is 46 in total. They are located within the nucleus (a region of the cell that is bounded by a specialized membrane, and which houses the genetic material). When a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell, the newly created zygote normally receives 23 chromosomes from each parent. The contribution of genetic information from each parent is what makes each baby a distinctive blend of both characteristics. In Down syndrome a mistake during division of the sperm or egg cell produces a cell with an extra chromosome 21. This event occurs during cell division and is referred to as nondisjunction, or the failure of all chromosomes to separately properly resulting in retention of one of the chromosomes in one of the two new daughter cells. This is also called trisomy 21 and is accounted for 95% of all Down syndrome patients. A rare number of Down syndrome cases the original egg and sperm cells begins with the correct number of chromosomes but shortly after fertilization during the phase where cells are dividing rapidly a single cell can divide abnormally creating a line of cells with an extra chromosome 21.It’s called a cell line mosaicism. The individual with this type of down syndrome has two types of cells: some 46 chromosomes which is the normal number and some with 47. Individuals who are mosaic for trisomy 21 typically have less sever sign and symptoms of the disorder. Another are location that can cause down syndrome is called a chromosome translocation.
