John Proctor's Dynamic Character
John Proctor is a very dynamic character who has an internal conflict between being righteous and falling into temptation. This character is very unique because he changes his personality throughout the story. I like John Proctor because he is a symbol of the common man because most men fall into temptation at one point in their lives. We all try to do well but we are all sinners and we need to learn from our mistakes. I can relate to this character because I to have fallen into temptation but turn to God to guide me and direct me in the right path. John has committed adultery previous to the play. He is a farmer who has a good work ethic. John seems to be full of remorse for his affair with Abigail, his former servant. He has the mentality that he will not commit adultery ever again. A good example of this is when he is speaking to Abigail and says, “But …show more content…
He actually undergoes two big changes at the end. John is now accused of witchcraft by Marry Warren because she wanted to save herself. Now we have to recall that John had not been attending church and could not remember the 10 commandments, but he was a Christian. He says that Elizabeth would never lie, so Danforth gives John a chance and says that Elizabeth can come and say if John is really telling the truth. Elizabeth goes into court, and Danforth asks her if it is true that Abigail was kicked out of the house for having an affair with John Proctor. Elizabeth lies to save her husband and says that it is a false account. John is then sentenced to jail but he eventually admits to witchcraft even though he did not practice any sort of witchcraft. This is the first major change because we never expect for Proctor to make such a radical change to admit to something like that. Then, Proctor does not want to make that confession publicly so he tears it up and denies practicing witchcraft. We see yet another drastic change for the better this

John Proctor is a tormented individual. He believes his affair with Abigail irreparably damaged him in the eyes of God, his wife Elizabeth, and himself. True, Proctor did succumb to sin and commit adultery; however, he lacks the capacity to forgive himself. Unsurprisingly, his relationship with Elizabeth remains strained throughout the majority of the play. He resents Elizabeth because she cannot forgive him and trust him again, but he is guilty of the same thing. In fact, his own inability to forgive himself merely intensifies his reaction to Elizabeth's lack of forgiveness.…

I think the best case scenario for John Proctor is he is a man and for a long time his wife was sick, and could’nt give him what he desired so their love grew apart and he had to look elsewhere and he did’nt have to look very far and he looked toward his maid Abigale Williams for she was attracted to him and it made the whole incedent all the more harder to refuse and and then he realized the mistake he had made as his wife was getting better she shunned Abigale from her household, but Abby did’nt go quietly and she is still trying to minipulate John into leaving his wifeand it was making her more minipulative because she knew he would not leave his wife without somekind of “Brain Washing”. And that is how I think John Proctor is a very good, and honest man because he saw his mistake although it was to late he did’nt run from the problem or give into temptation he faced it like a strong man and starred it down in the face and dealt with the problem from it’s source.…

After the affair, Abigail became horribly jealous of Elizabeth Proctor. Furthermore, at the end of the play Proctor is persistent by saying that no matter what anyone says to convince him differently, he would rather die an honest man and save his name. John Proctor begins the novel as a man who has made mistakes and is trying to avoid further mistakes. The first thing that would characterize John as a villain is when the affair with Abagail is made known to the readers. This shows villain like characteristics because he has broken the trust of his wife and ruined the relationship with God by committing one of the sins listed on the Ten Commandments. Further into the novel we see that proctor is trying to turn things around but not full heartedly. He try's to earn the forgiveness of his wife by making sure she is content with everything he does.…

First off, John Proctor is an honorable and noble character. He always finds the truth. For instance, when he confronts Mary Warren about the poppet and she says that it was just for sport, then John says “You’re coming to the court with me, Mary. You will tell it in the court.” (80) This shows how nothing will stop him from getting the truth, and helping others with it. He will also do anything to save somebody else. In Act III, Proctor made a “petition” that 91 respectable people signed and was “... a sort of testament. The people signing it declare their good opinion of Rebecca, and my wife, and Martha Corey.” (93) Also in Act III John says “She (Abigail) thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore's vengeance, and you must see it…” (110) In this quote he is admitting to having an affair with Abigail, he admits to having the affair to explain why Abigail would want Elizabeth dead. As you can see, John Proctor is a very noble and honorable character because he will do anything to help somebody else, even if it means he has to sacrifice.…

First, John becomes ostracized by so many when people find out that he has lots of hatred for the town’s Reverend; Reverend Parris. John says, “I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation…There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God anymore” (Page 28. Line 28). Also John says, “…to ask ownership is like you shall own the meeting house itself; the last meeting I were at you spoke so long on deeds and mortgages I thought it were an auction” (Page 30. Line 8). Even though John says his reasons for not liking the ways of Reverent Parris, he is still looked down upon because it is unacceptable to not attend church on a weekly basis in the town of Salem in 1692. This is an instance of John being weak because instead of trying to figure out a solution with Reverend Parris, he just stops going to church. Another example of John Proctor showing weakness in the play is when he cheats on Elizabeth. When John says, “No more! I should have roared you down when first you told me your suspicion. But I wilted, and like a Christian, I confessed. Confessed...Let you look sometimes for the goodness in me, and judge me not” (Page 55. Line 7), he is confessing the truth which shows him being somewhat strong. The overall aspect of his dishonesty displays weakness and lacks…

We feel the empathy and the tragedy of the situation, because it shows that even a good person like John Proctor, can have a downfall as big as this. In the play, John Proctor is an ordinary farmer, who has proven himself a hardworking man, with a good name around the village of Salem. John is the type of man who often says what he believes and he does what his heart tells him to. In his past he has done a lot of good and bad deeds, but he is a human and humans do make mistakes for example, he had committed the crime of lechery with Abigail Williams. Abigail used to work at his house as a servant for him and his wife Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail is a two-faced 18 year old who causes a lot of mischief and she is in love with John and will do anything to separate him and his wife, just to take her place. John clearly regrets the mistake he had made in his life, and does his best to pick himself up and attempts to change things in his life. He is a smart man who is somewhat foolish, because from what I have observed, John puts more importance on the present than he does on the future. He is a kind man who is loyal to his wife and friends; he even blackens his own name for the sake of their lives. He is devoted to stop the hangings, and save the people who are accused.…

John was a hero, because he wanted to save the lives of all the innocent people who were going to hang. He was an honest man that made a mistake. In act four John transforms into a man who has nothing left but his dignity. His soul has been blackened, and he cannot confess to such a crime that he did not commit, even if it would’ve saved his life. He believed in dying the moral way without lies, rather than living with a name that is full of sin. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies...” (Act four, pg.145). Proctor’s self-worth was being challenged, and he wanted to keep his last shred of dignity, before he was a completely destroyed man.…
