John Proctor: Tragic Hero
As human beings, we each display specific traits and qualities that define our character and shape our personalities. The way in which we carry ourselves establishes our reputations, as well as how others identify us. We are each prone to making mistakes, and unfortunately, the mistakes we make can affect the way people see us as well. The struggle to regain a good name can be difficult and uncertain once someone’s reputation is tarnished. In Arthur Miller’s timeless play, The Crucible, a well-respected man named John Proctor betrays his wife and struggles to gain her forgiveness and his good name in the village of Salem. Although John Proctor betrays his wife, he remains the tragic hero of the play for he recognizes his faulty actions and dies with integrity and honesty in the end.
In the play, John Proctor holds a tragic flaw that leads him to his downfall. Proctor embodies the deadly sin of lust, for he acts upon his attraction to a young, manipulative, and strikingly beautiful girl in the village named Abigail Williams and betrays his wife. While he attempts to disconnect himself from his sin, as well as Abigail, she states, “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near!” (Miller 22) Abigail’s statement uncovers evidence regarding the secret relationship she and John Proctor previously shared. Both she and Proctor know the relation they shared is wrong, and this detail exhibits how his tragic flaw of lust led him to commit such a faulty action he can not expose to anyone. As Proctor continues to conceal his past relationship with Abigail, his wife Elizabeth’s suspicions of the two having associated begin to surface when he accidentally reveals they were alone together. In disbelief, Elizabeth says, “John, you are not open with me. You saw her with a crowd, you said.” (Miller 55) Elizabeth’s uncertainty in her husband’s claims

Here’re more specific reasons why John Proctor is a tragic hero. First, he committed adultery with his servant, Abbigail Williams, and thought he can hide and conceal this fact. John Proctor. Honest, upright, and blunt-spoken, Proctor is a good man, but has a secret, fatal flaw. His lust for Abigail led to their affair, and created Abigail’s jealousy of his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch mess in motion. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail’s rampage through Salem but only if he confesses to his adultery. Such an admission would ruin his good name, and Proctor is a proud man who places great emphasis on his reputation. He eventually makes an attempt, through Mary Warren’s testimony, to name Abigail as a fraud without revealing the crucial information. When this attempt fails, he finally bursts out with a confession, calling Abigail a “whore” and proclaiming his guilt publicly. Only then does he realize that it is too late, that matters have gone too far, and that not even the truth can break the powerful frenzy that he has allowed Abigail to whip up. Proctor’s confession succeeds only in leading to his arrest and conviction as a witch, and though he criticizes the court and its proceedings, he is also aware of his terrible role in allowing this fervor to grow unchecked.…

In the play, John Proctor is an ordinary farmer, who has proven himself a hardworking man, with a good name around the village of Salem. John is the type of man who often says what he believes and he does what his heart tells him to. In his past he has done a lot of good and bad deeds, but he is a human and humans do make mistakes for example, he had committed the crime of lechery with Abigail Williams. Abigail used to work at his house as a servant for him and his wife Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail is a two-faced 18 year old who causes a lot of mischief and she is in love with John and will do anything to separate him and his wife, just to take her place. John clearly regrets the mistake he had made in his life, and does his best to pick himself up and attempts to change things in his life. He is a smart man who is somewhat foolish, because from what I have observed, John puts more importance on the present than he does on the future. He is a kind man who is loyal to his wife and friends; he even blackens his own name for the sake of their lives. He is devoted to stop the hangings, and save the people who are accused.…

It cannot be denied that John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams. He did something wrong and his actions haunt him throughout the play. He did break the sixth commandment, but because he is a sinner does not mean he is a terrible man. Everyone has sinned, and they cannot try and change that. It is how they deal with sin that defies who they are. John Proctor shows that he is not bad by having the feeling of guilt. For without guilt, it would mean that what he did, in his eyes did not feel wrong. This is not the case because during act one, while Proctor is introduced, Abigail tempts him while they are alone.…

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. The Crucible by Arthur Miller takes place in 1672 in Massachusetts. A girl, Abigail Williams, accuses several women of witchcraft, and other girls follow suit. Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife, gets accused of witchcraft, and eventually John does too. He refuses to confess, and eventually is hanged. Miller wrote this book as an allusion to the communist paranoia and trials in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. In The Crucible, one sees John Proctor as not only a hero, but a tragic hero. A tragic hero makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to their own destruction. Proctor is a tragic hero because of his noble (but not perfect) character and his downfall that was only partially deserved.…

Before the play takes place, Abigail Williams and John Proctor had an affair while Abigail was working as a servant in their home. Eventually, John confessed and apologized to Elizabeth, pledging his faithfulness to her. Nonetheless, at the time the play takes place, Elizabeth still hasn't fully forgiven him, and gives him a hard time about it. Abigail confessed the pretense of her accusations to him when they were alone, and now he has no way to prove that she's lying to the court. But because he was alone with her again, Elizabeth becomes angry with him. She still doubts her husband because she feels that if it were any other girl he had to go testify against, he would not hesitate. But, because it's Abigail, John feels he has to think harder on making a decision. He doesn't want his name spoiled by a counter-testimony. John feels he is now justified in becoming angry because for the seven months since his confession, he has done nothing but try to please his wife, and she still approaches him with suspicion and accusations. Proctor feels that she will "forget nothin' and forgive nothin'." Elizabeth argues back that he then shouldn't do anything to make her suspicious. This is a trial on their true love, and at that time, things aren't going well. It will take love, trust and forgiveness for the marriage to survive.…

John Proctor is a very dynamic character in the Crucible. He is someone who appears to be righteous to the general public/townspeople but is actually someone who harbors a deep secret: he has committed adultery with Abigail. Proctor is one of the few in the play who firmly believes that Abigail and the girls are frauds and he is strongly against the witch trials. He knows that once he confesses to committing adultery, Abigail’s testimonies will be questioned and that he can save a lot of innocent people, but he is afraid of tainting his reputation of being a righteous man. At the end of Act III, he is found guilty of witchcraft and is arrested; in Act IV, he is given the chance to “confess” and save himself from hanging. He does end up confessing for Elizabeth and his children. However, when Danforth tells him to sign his name, Proctor agrees. Proctor no longer has his soul; his reputation is gone; all he has left is his name. He proclaims that “[he] cannot have another [name] in [his] life” and refuses to “sign [him]self to lies” to save himself (Miller 1333). He seems to have issues with his pride and his pride gets in the way of him saving himself. Although he admits he is not a hero, he dies with his integrity intact and his name still his. Arthur Miller displays how far people will go to keep their reputation and name clean through John Proctor’s character.…
