John Bosco Research Paper
St John Bosco, also known as Don (Father) Bosco, was one of the greatest chaplains and teachers of all time. He is best known for his establishment of recreational and educational programs for young boys living in poverty. This essay will demonstrate how Bosco changed the lives of many of the young living in poverty through his religious life and ideas of educating the poor.
Through a commitment with God, Bosco devoted his life to assisting disadvantaged youth and empowering others by establishing his own order. He would frequently go to a factory town, Turin, where many children lived and worked in poverty; this inspired him to devote his life to helping the young poor. The Salesians, through schools and programs, continue Bosco’s teachings today working with young people, the homeless and those in domestic poverty. Many other organizations today work on his values of helping young people and giving people a better life such as Beyond Blue and at his death he had opened 250 houses of the Salesian Society education 130,000 children (Knight, 2012). Furthermore, he challenged many views on education. He banned violent punishment in his schooling; this was to stop the children being at fault later in life, this has led the pathway for modern schooling today where violent punishment is not allowed. In 1877 Bosco went on to explain his teaching method ‘Preventive Pedagogical Method’, which he said that the, “system is based entirely on reason and religion, and above all on kindness.”
As a result of St. John Bosc’s generosity and the introduction of education as a way to escape poverty, he is admired throughout the world today. As a Father and teacher of youth, he selflessly dedicated his life through his religious vocation and educational programs. His message empowered others to be selfless and to carry on his work with the education of young people.
