Joel the Ripper Rifkin
Case Studies CJ211 Christine Levers
Term Paper – Criminal Behavior April 3, 2013
Joel Rifkin – “Joel the Ripper” Joel David Rifkin, also known as “Joel the Ripper”, who was born on January 20, 1959 is a serial killer convicted of the murder of nine women. Although it is believed he killed as many as 17 drug addicted prostitutes, between 1989 and 1993 in New York City and Long Island. He is suspected by some to be responsible for some of the Long Island prostitutes whose remains were found in March and April 2011. In an April 2011 prison interview with Newsday, Rifkin denied having anything to do with the recently discovered remains. Rifkin often hired prostitutes in Brooklyn and Manhattan; he lived in East Meadow, a suburban town on Long Island. While viewing all the videos, reading books, viewing documentaries and newspaper articles on this man it is truly hard to pinpoint the exact type of killer he truly is; considering the many traits of a few different serial killer types he could fit. This person, I won’t even classify as a man could fit a few serial killer types; such as mission, but has so many characteristics of a hedonistic sexual sadist as well as power/control traits. He for the most part would have sex with most of his victims and then kill them, which were all prostitutes that would go undetected as missing for quite a while and he very well knew this information. He would make them comfortable, have sex with them and for most of the cases beat and strangle them and later dismember them and distribute their body parts. Although, in some cases he incased them in a trunk and dumped them but typically keeping to his usual dumping sites; some cases he used concrete and threw them in the East River never to be found. I consider him a mission killer because he targeted prostitutes with a random selection but mainly did it when his mother and sister were out of town which to me sounds planned to a certain degree. He has stated in many

Robert Willie Pickton is famously known as the serial killer who would hunt prostitutes on the streets of Vancouver and lure them back on his farm, where he lived with his brother Dave Pickton. Beginning in 1978, women around the city had been disappearing mysteriously. However, Robert Pickton was not arrested until Feburary 22nd 2002, and was eventually sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years for the disappearance and murder of six prostitutes in the Vancouver area. He later admitted to killing 49 women, and was extremely upset that he was caught and incarcerated before he could make it to an even 50. The RCMP and the Vancouver Police Department had over twenty years to explore the disappearances of these women. The police investigation during this time period with regard to this particular case was very weak and lacked effort, communication and power. The investigation that involved Robert Pickton did not begin until late 1998, twenty years after the first disappearance. It continued until 2002 when enough evidence was finally gathered to have Pickton arrested. Although the criminal justice system is structured to find and detain felons as quickly as possible, it will be proven that due to the systemic failures of the Canadian justice system, serial killer Robert Pickton was able to commit repeated offences over many years.…

David Parker Ray would be best described as a sadistic type of rapist. He like to instill fear into is victims by playing a tape before beginning his torture. It is also suspected that his raping often led to torture and killing his victims. In the documentary, it was estimated that he killed over 30 women and dismembered their bodies. He used a torture trailer and enjoyed inflicting pain and enjoyed inserting items he had made into them. I do believe he killed some of his victims. There are too many coincidences and witness coming forward for their not to be a least a few he murdered.…

“Ask a psychopath what love is and he’ll go on and on, but he has never felt it himself…If you catch him lying, he’ll just shift gears and go on as though nothing had happened” (Goleman). Ted Bundy was one of the most famous psychopaths in the history of the country (Nordheimer). People say he was the perfect killer- handsome, intelligent, witty, and charming (Boynton 25). Bundy was the complete opposite of what people thought a serial killer looked like, so his victims did not fear him (“Ted Bundy”). Robert Keppel, an expert on serial killers, stated, “He taught us that a serial killer can appear to be absolutely normal, the guy next door (“Serial Killers and Mass Murderers”). At one point he was working for a suicide hotline; a friend once said, “Ted Bundy took lives, he also saved lives” (Thompson). Bundy not only thrived on the attention he received from the police and the media (Editors), but loved the thrill of stalking his victims (U*X*L). Not one person Ted Bundy knew would have guessed he was able to do such horrid things.…

This next serial killer is one that to me is one of the most horrible killers that ever lived. There is no other way to describe Albert Fish as anything but a monster. He was a living nightmare that looked like an innocent grandpa. But under the surface he was something that no sane person can possibly imagine. Fish’s sadistic behavior did not begin to surface until after his wife left him for John Straube. Fish got great pleasure from pain. Whether him inflicting it on others or inflicting it on himself. He liked to be paddled till he bled and the paddle would sometimes have ½ nails on it. He would get anybody he could to paddle him, his children, neighbor hood children, and he would even answer classify ads in the paper for woman looking for a husband. But he quickly told them that he just wanted them to paddle him not get married.…

Now let's get something straight, when I say I like serial killers it doesn’t mean I have an obsession with John Wayne Gacy, or a shrine for The Zodiac Killer. It does not mean that I see Aileen Wuornos as a role model. It means the way they think interests me like no other. The psychology behind it. How could someone torture and kill another living, breathing human being? What's the difference between…

Jack the Ripper was a murderous madman who terrorized prostitutes in the late 1880s. Time has not diminished the gruesomeness of the killings. All the victims' throats were cut ;some victims were disemboweled ;and the killer took organs from some of his victims. When fear of the Ripper peaked, the killings stopped, and a century of speculation ensued (jack 1). They often see a category of people, such as women or prostitutes, as “unclean”, and see their removal of those beings as improving the world. Or, they think that killing the victim, usually in some sort of a ritualistic manner, redeems the victim their wrongdoings. In that case, the killer is a special being and the victim is “chosen” and should be grateful. They often find the victim’s ingratitude infuriating, though unfortunately foreseeable. Serial killers must continuously kill simply because they are addicted to the feelings they get when they do. They also rationalize every aspect and detail of their behavior so there is no reason in their head as to why they should stop. They know what they’re doing, the consequences of their actions, and how to avoid getting caught. Most serial killers, and psychopaths in general, are “consummate chameleons” who are able to hide their rage and true intentions behind a charismatic, civilized facade called the “mask of sanity” (Newton). Psychopaths are amoral and though they knowing the difference between right and wrong, they do not care and lack feelings of remorse or guilt. They tend to objectify other people and treat them as if they were…
