Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History, the historical nonfiction book written by Antonio Mendez and Matt Baglio, brings the reader into the world of deception and espionage. As he describes the events behind the CIA’s pursuit to rescue hostages from Iranian captivity, Mendez utilizes a first-person narrative that helps present the story as historical nonfiction. During the event of the security check at the airport, Mendez’s usage of past tense language must remain in the story to sound historical; however, his personal diction and limited selection of detail develops a genuinely inhibited and professional tone, which would have to change for the section to become dramatized as historical fiction.…

The Movie Gangs of New York, released in 2002, gives insight into the violence, corruption, and disarray that occurred in The Five Points of Manhattan during the 19th century, and reveals one of the biggest skeletons in New York’s closet. Martin Scorsese’s translation of the events in the film proves to be very intriguing, and for the most part accurate. However, there are a few aspects of the film he did not correctly portray: the timing of events, and the scale of the events that occurred.…

Lucas was born in La Grange, North Carolina and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina.[8] He claims that the incident that sparked his motivation to embark on a life of crime was witnessing his 12-year-old cousin 's murder at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan, for apparently "reckless eyeballing" (looking at a Caucasian woman), in Greensboro, North Carolina.[5] He drifted through a life of petty crime until one particular occasion when after a fight with a former employer he fled to New York on the advice of his mother.[5] In Harlem he indulged in petty crime and pool hustling before he was taken under the wing of gangster Bumpy Johnson.[5] Lucas ' connection to Bumpy has since come under some doubt; he claimed to have been Johnson 's driver for 15 years, although Johnson spent just 5 years out of prison before his death in 1968. According to Johnson 's widow, much of the narrative that Lucas claims as his actually belonged to another young hustler named Zach Walker, who lived with Bumpy and his family and later betrayed him.[9]…

The film begins with an ironic video of Richard Nixon calling drugs “public enemy Number 1”; this is followed with several other clips of various presidents backing up the claim. The main protagonist, Gary Webb, an investigative reporter for San Jose Mercury, is introduced to the story as a journalist who investigates the War on Drugs. During this time, Gary is handed a grand jury transcript by a woman named Coral, who allows him to take a first hand look at the already made connection between drug lords and the American government. Already looking to verify the drug connection between the Nicaraguan rebels and the CIA, Webb’s early inside look at the grand jury transcript allows him to start on his story about the crimes committed by US regime and outside forces. Webb alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and had used the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua.…
