Globalisation is the integration of cultures, societies and economies from a variety of countries through the interconnection and intense relationship between international trade, technological communication and politics. Opportunities are created because the barriers of trade, investment and financial flows are lowered. (Balakrishnan 2004) World Trade Organisation (WTO) encourages free trade between nations, which assist in eliminating barriers among nations. Countries are mostly concerned about the impacts of globalisation on local values, businesses, culture and the displacement of jobs. Wood et al. (2013, 15) suggests that an organisation heading towards globalisation must ensure that the management needs to have strong understandings of cross-cultural management, language barriers, re-engineering the organisation, managing the virtual workplace and international business strategy.
The western and local both experience rapid economic growth from the advantages of globalisation. There is a global market for companies to expand their business. Multinational corporations (MNCs) enjoy lower tax rate and cheap labour. In the case of Nike, it justified its expansions by using reasons such as lower input costs, access to new markets and resources, and exploiting economies of scale to lower the costs per item to increase profitability.
