A Woman on a Mission The hundred years war was a war between England and France over part of what is today modern day France. King Charles of Frances’ throne was trying to be captured by the English who were claiming the rights to it. During the dark ages there were not many women who were really important or even written down in history. The women in the dark ages were supposed to stay at home and work and were widely mistreated. However, one of the women was able to break through this wall that divided the genders. this woman was Joan of Arc. Joan was born on January 6, 1412 in the town of Domremy to two peasant farmers. This was not that easy but she did it by first promising him that by the end of the war he would be accepted as the true king of France. Also she was able to tell Charles secrets that he believed were just between him and god. This led him to Give Joan white armor and gave her a group of french soldiers to command. She led them to Orleans to fight the English. Riding a White horse Joan led the Army in Battle and was wounded. The French army rallied around her and was able to take back Orleans. From then on she was to be known as the Maid of Orleans. After such a victory Joan led Charles to Riem where he was officially pronounced as king with not many problems. During this battle she was thrown from her horse outside the gates when the french retreated back into the town. The Burgundians took advantage of this and held her captive. She was given then for 10,000 pounds to the English. They held under 70 counts from dressing like a man to witchcraft. The guards who held her told her that if she signed confession, go to church, and dress like a woman they would let her free. However they did not after Joan did all three. This led her to dress like a soldier which then the English quick in response punished her by burning at the stake. She died on may 30, 1431. However, her legacy would still live on. 20 years later King Charles held a trail that cleared her name. She also became a mythical figure in france leading them to victory. Then in 1920 She was canonized as a Catholic saint by Pope Benedict XV. She has portrayed in many different works of art. She as well was named a patron of france. Now and throughout time her name will still live
