This class will provide concepts and background which will allow you to engage with fine art specifically, and the visual world in general, with greater understanding and appreciation. You will be introduced to the primary vocabulary of the visual arts and to the various means and methods that artists have used throughout history to express the basic human need for order and coherence in our lives. The impulse to make art is as old as our species; the fact that humans have invested so much time, passion, money and even blood into its making and preserving suggests its significance to us. The first sections of the class focus on the groundwork for appreciation with an explanation of the things we look for when we analyze art. The next sections will give you an overview of western art history and allow you to apply some of the concepts you’ve learned as you look at art from different centuries and periods. At the very least, if you apply yourself, after completing this class you should be able to take a date to a museum or gallery and impress them with your sensitivity and sophistication. Note: I reserve the right to alter the schedule if circumstances require it. ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION
You will be expected to come to each class having done the reading and being prepared to discuss it. The size of the class makes taking attendance on a regular basis unrealistic, but your grade will reflect your commitment to the class. Periodically attendance will be taken and absences noted. Repeated absences will result in the lowering of your final grade.
