Gather about six to eight fibers and tie the ends together. Green fibers with green fibers and tan fibers with tan fibers. After they have all been grouped it is time to wash the fibers. Boil the tan fibers for 10 minutes and then let them dry. Do not cook the green fibers, leave them out to dry along with the tan fibers for 2 ½ days.

Once your fibers have dried, the weaving process with begin. There are two colors you can have for your basket, light or dark. The tan fibers will create a light basket and green a dark basket. To begin weaving, take the desired fiber and stretch it. Make a small ring or coil at the end and thread a needle with string or a Jippi Jappa fiber through the middle of the coil and loop around and pull tight. This will keep it in place.

Continue the weaving process of making a coil and threading the needle through. With each new coil include parts of the previous one to hold the whole thing in place. Remember, you are starting the base of the basket. Once you have reached the desired size of the base you will begin to make the sides. To make the sides weave the strands of the outer coil in a vertical or diagonal

After the pill has been wrapped in all 4 yarns it is called the center. Then they weigh and measure the center which should weigh 4.48oz and measure 22 ½ cm. Next they add latex adhesive to a spinning drum then put the centers into it to evenly coat them. The center's absorb the adhesive and the yarn sticks together. The center's air dry for 48 hours but remain sticky. Using a hydraulic press they punch out figure eight shapes in leather and holes around the perimeter for stitching later. But before they go to stitching they stamp the date and lot number on each of them. Next they wrap the figure eights and wet towels for the moisture will make them more pliable to sow. They roll water-based adhesive onto one side of the cut out which sticks to the moist leather. Then they take two of the cut outs and put them on the sticky Center and it is a perfect fit. Next they clamp a ball in a vice and start sewing using the holes that were punched out around the perimeter earlier. Using two needles a sewer pulls thread through the ball's center and up through the holes around the perimeter in the leather to make a cross stitch them together. They rub wax on the threads to stiffen them. This reduces…

    Spindle Essay

Initially we obtained a piece of pine wood that would be manipulated into a spindle. We hammered the live and dead centers into the each of the ends of the wood so that there would be an imprint of the two centers where the wood would be able to dovetail into the lathe. After the center imprints were made, we used the hand planer to flatten the corners of the wood to help round it out before we put it on the lathe. Once the corners were flattened, we started on the lathe. We first had to put a bit of linseed oil in the imprint of the dead center on the wood. Then we put the wood on the two centers of the lathe securely so when it starts spinning it will stay on the lathe and not shake loose. After everything on the lathe was ready to go, we turned the lathe on and used the round nose to round the whole piece of wood into a cylinder. Once we had the wood down to the correct diameter, we took sandpaper and sanded down the wood while it was spinning on the lathe to get rid of the any ridges so that it was round and smooth. Now that the spindle was rounded off and smooth, we started on making the beads. Before we made the beads, we first had to use our pencil to draw the lines where we would make the beads while the lathe was turning our soon-to-be spindle. Once we had the lines marked down, we used the spearpoint to make the beads where the lines were. We gently pushed the spearpoint into the wood at each line making beads at each one. After we made all the beads we had to round them out with the spearpoint, and then took the skew to compress the wood fibers between the beads to make the beads more defined. Once that task was completed, we sanded down the spindle finished our dreaded…

Warp Knit Structure Warp knitting is defined as a stitch forming process in which the yarns are supplied to the knitting zone parallel to the selvedge of the fabric, i.e. in the direction of the wales. In warp knitting, every knitting needle is supplied with at least one separate yarn. In order to connect the stitches to form a fabric, the yarns are deflected laterally between the needles. In this manner a knitting needle often draws the new yarn loop through the knitted loop formed by another end of yarn in the previous knitting cycle. A warp knitted structure is made up of two parts. The first is the stitch itself, which is formed by wrapping the yarn around the needle and drawing it through the previously knitted loop. This wrapping of the yarn is called an overlap. The diagram shows the path taken by the eyelet of one yarn guide traveling through the needle line, making a lateral overlap (shog) and making a return swing. This movement wraps the yarn around the needle ready for the knock-over displacement. The second part of stitch formation is the length of yarn linking together the stitches and this is termed the under lap, which is formed by the lateral movement of the yarns across the needles. The length of the under lap is defined in terms of needle spaces. The longer the underlap, the more it lies at right angles to the fabric length axis. The longer the underlap for a given warp the greater the increase in lateral fabric stability, conversely a shorter under lap reduces the width-wise stability and strength and increases the lengthways stability of the fabric. The length of the underlap also influences the fabric weight. When knitting with a longer…

After the cocoons have been sorted, they have to be boiled in water, while they are still intact, for 5 minutes while they are being turned gently. They are then taken out of the water and a dissecting needle is used to start picking up the strands. Once a single strand is found that will come off easily it has to be wound around a pencil. This is how the cocoon is loosened so that it can be unwound in 1 continuous thread, which is collected into skeins. The process is called “reeling.”…
