Jimmy Valentine Identity
People can change for the better, but it's their choice. Jimmy Valentine was one of the best in the safe-cracking business. When one of his jobs was in Elmore, Jimmy went not knowing that the trip would change his life. When Jimmy arrived, he saw a woman with the name of Annabel and instantly fell in love. Since that day, he has dropped all connections to safe-cracking and he started a new, successful life. Jimmy Valentine is living a moral life because he risked his identity for Agatha’s life, he gave up robbing for Annabel, and he hasn’t left Elmore since he changed his identity. Jimmy Valentine risked his identity for the sake of Agatha’s life. When Agatha got trapped in Mr. Adams new vault, Annabel asked Ralph to get her out. Ralph would do anything to help Annabel and Agatha. Right when Annabel asked, “Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place” -Henry, page 5. While doing this, Jimmy ignored the outside world. Knowing Annabel and the rest of his ‘family to be’ would find out his real identity didn’t occur to him. Jimmy was successful while stealing, but the minute he saw Annabel, none of that mattered. Jimmy gave up everything to become a new person and so he and Annabel could live a great life together. When people fall in love, they tend to do some crazy things. In this case, Jimmy gave up everything he knew to be with someone he didn’t know. He took the chance of being caught for love. In the story, Jimmy says, “I tell you Billy, she’s an angel. She believes in me; and I wouldn’t do another crooked thing for the world” Henry, page 4. Jimmy confesses to his friend though a letter his love for Annabel and how he wouldn’t go back to his old ways. This quote clearly states how how he isn’t going to do anymore robbing because of Annabel. Love can make people do crazy things, but it can also heal wounds and help people

    The first story “A Retrieved Reformation” is about a professional and elusive safecracker Jimmy Valentine. The initiating event of this story was when Jimmy had been released after a 10 months sentence. So he took the first sweet joys of liberty and returned to the hotel where he had a room. He refreshed himself up and dragged out his dusty-covered “magic” suit-case, which consisted of the finest set of burglar’s tools. It meant that Jimmy was going back to the Monkey business. It was an ordinary day and Jimmy was going back to his hotel. Suddenly he saw a young lady. Her name was Anabel Adams. He looked into her eyes, forgot what he was and became another person. A sudden and alterative attack of love made him change the name and become Ralph D. Spencer and open a shoe-shop. Finally he was flourishing, won respect of the community, got engaged with Anabel. Everything would have been splendid but for the incident in the bank. Anabel’s father was presenting a new safe.
