3 December 2015 Book Review “Attitude is everything”, Jeff Keller
The reason I chose to read “Attitude is everything” is that I believe that attitude plays an important role in one’s life : either it makes it better, or it can ruin it. I am interested in finding new ways of viewing life, solving problems and see different perspectives, and I realized that attitude has a lot to say about this. The dictionary defines attitude as “manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind; position or posture of the body appropriate to or expressive of action, emotion, etc.: a threatening attitude; a relaxed attitude.
“Attitude is everything” by Jeff Keller represents an efficient self-book based on anecdotal evidences. The author speaks about his career changing : from a lawyer he became a motivational speaker. Jeff Keller took a stand that changed his life, he gave up to the security of his career for a hobby that brought him pleasure: “Part of the price I had to pay was giving up the money, prestige and security of my legal career.” The fact that he took a risk, brought him closer to his dream job. Children have a sunny disposition. Consider the attitude of a child who’s learning to walk. When he stumbles and falls down, what does he do? He doesn’t frown or blame the carpet. He doesn’t point fingers at his mother or father for giving him lousy instructions. His window is squeaky clean, and he feels like he can conquer the world. “ The book supports the idea that “We are a human magnet.” and that “we become what we think

In the famous movie Remember the Titans, the captain of the T.C. Williams football team stated, "attitude reflects altitude". When your attitude is positive you can fly higher than the sky, but if your attitude is negative then you can fall deep into the ocean. It has been said that a positive attitude is the key to success in life, and I just so happen to agree. Positivity can make you more motivated. When you are positive, others respect you and want to help you succeed.…

I want kids to feel- empowered is not the best word, but- connected to their lives and connected to their communities. I don't want them to feel like things kind of happen around them and there's nothing they can do about it. I want them to understand that each decision they make, like it or not, is a decision and it has an impact. And I want them to take responsibility for it." (pp.40-41)…

Society is a form of conformity, which “loses you time and blurs the impression of your character” (Marar 46) and it is human nature to not be held down by conformity. This creates a need to be in the wild, away from everything society has to offer, an escape. Marar connects this to the idea of becoming lost in one’s imagination, or the lack of it. As children we are consumed by our world of imagination, using our creativity and self-expression in its purest form, something lost in adults. Children are free to do and say as they please, they are not tied down by the conformity that adults are. This lack of freedom and expression in adults can be compared to a restriction of our humanly instincts, since it is human nature that we find the need to be free…

Gordon Allport 's view that an attitude is the most distinctive and indispensable concept in social psychology has been cited countless times (1935: cited in Hogg and Vaughan 2005). He defined it as a state of readiness, organized through experience, which influences an individuals ' responses to a situation or object to which it is related.…

An attitude can be defined as a “predisposition to act in a certain way towards some aspect of one’s environment, including other people” Mednick et al, (1975). Many theories have been put forward to predict attitude change, Argyle (1994). However, attitudes are extremely difficult to define and can’t be directly seen or measured, so behaviour is inferred from what people say or do. An attitude is the subjective evaluation of objects, people, events, ideas, activities and feelings. This evaluation is normally of a positive or negative nature and is based normally on experiences which you have conflicting feelings towards. Attitudes have a past, present and future, to which behaviour develops in a sequence. Many believe there are three components…

Our attitude can align with our behaviors, however many times our attitude may be one thing and our behavior another. A person may say that they believe one thing, yet when it comes down to it their behavior may reflect that they either have a different belief or that acting out their attitude is merely not acceptable behavior (Gilovich et al., 2013). Attitudes can be a successful predictor of behavior (Gilovich et al., 2013). For example I have a good attitude about exercise, therefore it is something I incorporate into my life and make a priority. So my attitude does influence my behavior in a positive way. However I also have good attitudes about volunteering more, spending more time reading my bible and reaching out to people. More times than not my behavior falls short of my attitude. That being said, it appears that attitudes more often than not represent good intentions. Often times a person believes something and furthermore, they believe that they will follow through. Due to either time restrictions or just a lack of ability to follow through, many attitudes do not actually come to fruition through behavior. Perhaps thinking about an attitude can change it because you put forth some effort to analyze and understand why you may have that attitude. Awareness can be the catalyst for…

Positive emotions are healthy for us, both physically and mentally. Negative emotions that we may be having can be offset by positive emotions such as cheerfulness, joy and contentment. Positive emotions have effects that last longer than the effects of negative emotions. Certain positive emotions, such as joy, may lead to other positive emotions, which may lead to physical activity, creativity, and intellectual stimulation. Experiencing positive emotions result in improvement of our emotional well-being. When I am feeling happy and cheerful, I always get energized. I want to go for a walk or break out the camera and see what creative images I can capture. Feeling happy broadens my outlook on life.…

Attitude is the way one feels about someone or something in particular. It can affect emotions, behavior, actions, and thoughts. The various factors that contribute to attitude include culture, situations, experience, and peer pressure. Culture deals with ones beliefs and values. Growing up in a specific culture could alter ones attitude towards something or someone with different views. Situations and experience contribute to attitude in that when someone goes through something good or bad, it could ultimately change their attitude towards it. Sometimes an experience can influence a person’s attitude towards a subject. Some of these experiences may include events, music, media, a conversation, or literature. This summer I read a mandatory book that changed my perspective. Before reading the book Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie, I believed that a person should only set fairly easy and attainable goals for themselves. Now my attitude is that you should pursue what makes you happy, and you shouldn’t let struggles stop you. When I read examples about following a passion, overcoming a fear, and being persistent in your efforts, my prior opinion began to change.…

In the short story “The Metaphor” by Budge Wilson Miss Hancock and Charlotte were shaped by society. Miss Hancock was overenthusiastic and flamboyant natured teacher who was loved by her class. She is an innately good adult. She was shaped by society to be a good and fun loving person. Charlotte was in Miss Hancock’s class, and she was a bright student who was not afraid to express her opinion because of the friendly environment her class had. Charlotte also had a mother who you could say is innately evil. Charlotte could have been an evil person too if it was not for Miss Hancock who influenced Charlotte to become good. This shows us that’s humans are born as blank slates and it is their surroundings that shape them into becoming who they are. Charlotte is a prime example of this. Charlotte was born as a blank slate and could have become good or evil. In conclusion this shows that humans can be influenced to become good or evil.…

“A smile and a positive attitude is the key to happiness” is my motto. I agree with the author that “attitude is everything” because the ability to choose your attitude, feelings, opinions, etc., affects the way you feel about life. Attitude stimulates energy and is the difference between having a “good day” or a “bad day”.…
