Jeanette Character Analysis
Jeanette took the hardships of not having caring parents to depend on throughout her childhood and in contrast, made Jeanette stronger and independent from the lack of care from her parents, Rose Mary and Rex. Since Jeanette was young, she was dependent on her parents to take care of her like any other child her age would, but unfortunately, Rose Mary and Rex never did. So Jeanette couldn’t depend on them such as when “[Jeanette’s] mom never turned the money over to [them]. So even though [Rose Mary] had a steady job, [they] were living pretty much like [they] had before,” like nothing (Walls 198). Furthermore, the fact that Rose Mary could have taken care of her family better, but was too selfish and not responsible to take care of her children and this caused Jeanette to realize she can’t depend on her parents anymore. …show more content…
Her independence is shown when she states to her dad that “as soon as [Jeanette] finish[es] classes, [she’s] getting onto the next bus out of [Welsh]. If the buses stop running, [she’ll] hitchhike. [She’ll] walk if [she] has to”, she’ll do whatever it takes (238). Jeanette is blatantly defying her dad Rex at that moment, setting her independence from him and so she won’t have attachments and is doing this for her independence away from her parents. Furthermore, Jeanette learned how to be independent and is confident to leave her family, not depend on her parents. Correspondingly, her moving away shows that she will be away from her parents, so Jeanette will be on her own and independent from everyone else. In addition, Jeanette moving away also lead to her become successful following her dream and her becoming an independent person led to these events to eventually occur. Therefore being dependant on someone can make you realize that you don’t need to depend so much on them and teaches you how to be

    3. Lafayette Escadrille = Lafayette was the aristocratic “hero of two worlds” according to my text book. He was the one who fought right next to George Washington himself, in the American Revolution. Lafayette was a great leader. For an example Lafayette lead a National Guard. The National Guard is a large middle class military service that was created to respond for the arrival of high class troops in Paris. The Guard group that Lafayette helped lead were one of the first groups to create a tri-colored badge. The colors on the badge were red, white, and blue. What blows my mind about this, is that Lafayette somewhat played a role in making the French flag because later in history France used those same colors to create their national flag.…

Lena Lingard intrigues me. She’s gentle even though she’s lived on the farm her entire life and she manages to make the littlest things exciting with her charisma. In ways, her adventurousness and excitement make her similar to Tony. However, they differ in that Ántonia possesses a quiet beauty and inner strength that contrasts with Lena’s liveliness. It’s strange-- I dream the same dream “a great many times, and it [is] always the same. I [am] in a harvest-field full of shocks, and I [am] lying against one of them. Lena Lingard [comes] across the stubble barefoot, in a short skirt, with a curved reaping-hook in her hand, and she [is] flushed like the dawn, with a kind of luminous rosiness all about her. She [sits] down beside me, [turns] to me with a soft sigh and said, ‘Now they are all gone, and I can kiss you as much as I like.’ I...wish I could have this flattering dream about Ántonia, but I never [do].” (109) I love Ántonia and her steady independence but I cannot see her in my dreams in…

For the first part of the book, the author is too young to understand that her predicament is not the average upbringing. Her father is an alcoholic, and her mother is somewhat of a free spirit. Neither can maintain jobs, and therefore do not stay in any one place for an extended period of time. Her father continually mentions building his family the “Glass Castle,” a house made completely of glass that he will build his family once they are wealthy enough. This castle represents the overall achievement of happiness later explained by the author. This is where the negative circumstances of the family are discussed. Jeanette is burned, and after receiving medical care, is taken from the hospital by her father to avoid paying the bill. “A few days later, when I had been in the hospital for about six weeks, Dad appeared alone in the doorway…

If they were not, he said, he would kick some a****s. I told Dad how nice and friendly everyone was. ‘Well, of course they are,’ he said. ‘They know you’re Rex Walls’s daughter.” (Walls 12). This portrayed Jeannette and her relationship with her father throughout the book. They always looked out for her, their bond was unbreakable and Jeannette believed in and defended her father’s honor until the ends of the world. Which speaks to Jeanette’s loyal side, and her faith in people, especially her father. “It was our secret. ‘I swear, honey, there are times when I think you’re the only one around who still has faith in me,’ he said. ‘I don’t know that I’d do if you ever lost it.’ I told him that I would never lose faith in him. And I promised myself I never would.” (Walls…

In Jeannette’s childhood, she faced many difficulties and roads that seem to lead to disasters after disaster. She faced those troubles very strongly. Once, Jeannette fell out of the car as she and her family moved away once again. Even though, her family did not come back to get her straight away, she still had faith that they will come to get her. This showed how she adapted to how non-observant her family members are, and she trusted them since she knew they loved her dearly. She also looks at moving around as an adventure so that she would be able to live her life to the fullest and not wither at the thought of what she did not have. Her siblings helped her fight against the other children that overpowered her. Everyone in there lives have made bad decisions that they regret, lead them to the wrong path, and wished they’ve made different decisions. However, I kind of would’ve wanted to have a childhood like any of them because they all went through hard times but at the end Jeannette and The author Wes became victorious. Furthermore, I would’ve somewhat liked to have a childhood like Jeannette's because her father would teach her things at times. For example, Jeannette states, “Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is “ ‘If you didn’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim’” (Walls, 66). If Jeannette's father never taught her that lesson then she wouldn’t have been…
