Jealousy In A Separate Peace
Senera the Younger said, "Life is neither a good nor an evil: it is a field for good and evil." This quote shows that when people go through life, it is not good or evil because it is a choice to be chosen. People are put in the field of good and evil to figure out where they are supposed to stand in life. Jealousy is shown most in this novel from Gene towards Finny in many different ways. Gene was a pessimistic thinker and he always saw the worst of things. When Gene showed guilt he did many things to show that he was feeling that way by trying to be like Finny. In the novel, A Separate Peace, Gene is inherently evil because he shows jealousy, pessimism, and guilt.

"You'd get things so scrambled up nobody would know who to fight anymore. You'd make a mess, a big terrible mess, Finny, out of war," (Knowles 101). Gene was a pessimistic thinker and had been doing it for an extended time, to a point where he was great at it. Being a pessimistic thinker is always looking at the bad in everything and neglecting the good. Gene sees everything in the worst way possible and God says to find something positive in everything. Gene is frowned upon when he acts like this.
"I spent as much time as I could in our room trying to empty my mind of every thought to forget where I was, or who I was," (Knowles 62). This shows that Gene was feeling guilty and was trying to forget everything he did not repent so he tried to forget about it. He also did felt guilt when he could not participate and attended the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session meeting. Instead of attending one of the meetings from the club he studied or did homework like the good student he was. Feeling guilty may be good and evil at the same time but it all depends on the situation that you are in.
