"The President's Own" United States Marine Band performed Monday October 2,

2006 at 8pm in the PAC. The director was Lieutenant Colonel Michael J. Colburn and the

assistant director was Captain Jason K. Fettig. The different numbers in the performance

were "Summon the Heroes", "Guillaume Tell Duo Brillant", "The High School Cadets",

"Scherzo and Finale" from Symphony No. 4 in F minor, "Semper Fidelis", "Lincolnshire

Posy", "American Spirituals", and "The Stars and Stripes Forever". The different

instruments played were flutes, clarinets, saxophone, cornets/trumpets, horns, trombones,

tubas, bass, and keyboard. There were other instruments used that used but I was not able

to identify them. When I looked at the pamphlet they were piccolo, oboe, bassoon,

euphonium, and percussion. I didn't know there were different types of clarinets.

I thought the performance was interesting. I went in not really knowing what to

expect. I didn't that the event was so formal, that the band would be so big, and that it

was such a popular event. The band was dressed in their marine attire and looked very

organized and professional. The band played very well. The music sounded like the

music you hear in the background of movies. Some of the songs were up beat or up

tempo and I didn't mind listening to them. Some of the other songs were kind of boring

and a drag to listen to. The songs sounded like very traditional songs that should be

appreciated. Being in this class and going to this performance allowed me to recognize

different things with music that I wasn't able to before. I am able to recognize more

instruments than before. I am also able to recognize the beats, meters, and tempo better

than before. I still have room for improvement but after doing a couple more of these

assignments I will be in better shape. Overall I thought the performance was great and the

music was just

The songs with political tones were pretty interesting to me too since I had never heard any of them before. I was also a little bit surprised when the sacred music did not have instrumental accompaniment, because I am so used to hearing it with church music. The martial music was fun to listen to, especially Yankee Doodle because it is so familiar with the words that were later added to it.…

It is pretty clear that the music wasn't appropriate for the time period. It was the jazz age but artists like Jay Z and Lana Del Rey had songs featured in the film. While it could be argued that the current music added things to the movie, like a larger audience, the music just didn't fit correctly. The inclusion of such current music takes…

The Marines band’s performance was outstanding. The discipline, respect, and passion they played was admirable. They brought such intensity to the pieces, and sometimes the music would make me imagine different movie-like scenarios that would match a movement or section of a piece and seemed like the perfect background music. Some scenarios that would come to mind would be a family reuniting or our brave soldiers fighting in the old battles like the civil war. The loud bang from the Cymbals that would echo throughout the gym.…

The first formal small jazz concert was held at the Maum Café on Sep. 25th, 2008. There were many music performances have held at the Maum Café but Zino Park, leader of the band, and manager of Maum Café agreed to arrange a formal jazz concert for the first time. The main theme of this concert was “Smooth Jazz with Zino Park at Maum”. Before the concert began, the band members introduced themselves to the audience. The names of players were:…

They played about 5 different songs but I could only catch four of them. The first song they played was called “You Don’t Know What Love is”. They didn’t mention who made the song. The song had a rough texture. All the instruments were playing very loud and wildly throughout the song. There wasn’t much form to this song. The saxophone was playing its own tune while the piano, cello, and drums had some type of repetition. There wasn’t a melody. I felt like they were playing off each other’s energy. There was some rhythm to this song but majority of the time it sounded like it was all freestyle. I think its just because jazz is played like that. The dynamics to this song was very soft and low key aside from the saxophone. The tempo was slow at first then it really picked up 30 seconds into the song. Overall…

What really pleased me about this performance was the large organ. I have never seen such a musical instrument like that one before in person. The performance was very loud, but the music they played was soothing. It was pleasing to me that they played instruments other than the organ. They also played an oboe, which is part of the woodwinds instrument family, and the trumpet, which is part of the brass instrument family. All of the musicians were very talented, and you could tell they have been producing and practicing music for many years. I liked how the performers made smooth transitions and that each song break was short.…

They sang a variety of songs and even though some were faster than others, they all had a very interesting tempo. Even the slower song that they sang had quicker syllables and transitions included in it, which I thought was an interesting dynamic. I enjoyed watching the quartet so much because it was clear that they wasn’t anything else they would…

I attended a jazz concert on November 3rd at the Frontenac Grill. The band, Joe Bozzi and I, played all kinds of music for us while this place was filled with various groups of people eating, drinking and chatting. This band played their songs by using three guitars, drums, saxophone, trumpet, xylophone and the piano throughout the whole entire time.…

The first piece Slavic Dance was up beat and exciting and it brought the audience into the show. I heard the piece and thought to myself ok the show has now begun. I think it is a good idea no matter what kind of performance it is, the start should be exciting and welcoming. The second piece, Three Preludes, was very clam and relaxing to the ears. At some points the song did get louder but sill had a nice legato feel throughout. La puerta del vino, was the third piece and was even quieter than the last, it sounded like a mystery piece. When a song is quiet and soft it make the audience listen harder because you do not want to miss it. The fourth piece was another duet and was up beat and woke everyone up from the short "nap" of quiet and softness form the last two-piece. The next piece Lisle Joyous L. 106 was similar to the last piece but wasn't as quick moving. Souvenirs was the second to last piece and was not only great but was fun to watch because the way it is written the performance are constantly getting their hands mixed up. The last piece was almost the same as the opening song but just a different section from it. I really like it because it was fast, fun, and very articulate. It had a lot a repeats or similar phrases so after a while you felt as if you know the song and could hum along with it. Not only is it good to open on a quick,…
