INTRODUCTION
Discussing Javanese culture is not easy, because it is so diverse and complex. Such a discussion could refer to language, way of life, ethics, performing arts, texts and more. This study focuses on the Javanese culture in terms of world-view, “the Javanese idea of the good life” as studied by Magnis-Suseno (1997). Because of the sheer size of the community, the homogeneity of its culture and their influence on the nation’s capital, Javanese culture influences the way of life of most Indonesians, and the Javanese dominate cultural, business, social and political activities in Indonesia (Mann 1996; Magnis-Suseno 1997). The Javanese have a complex code of etiquette and respect, reflected in the Javanese language. However, the maintenance of inner peace and harmony is a priority in social relationships among the Javanese. Indeed, maintenance of social harmony is the core value of Javanese culture (Magnis-Suseno 1997). The social relationship of the Javanese is characterised by two basic principles reflecting their ideas of a good life: conflict avoidance and respect.
Javanese culture is characterised by the avoidance of all form of direct confrontation. Indeed, conflict avoidance plays a crucial role in maintaining social harmony. To avoid conflict, the Javanese are committed to the concept called as “rukun”, which shows how people should interact in a social relationship. Mulder (1978, p. 39) has described rukun as follows: Rukun is soothing over of differences, cooperation, mutual acceptance, quietness of heart, and harmonious existence.     Every individual definitely belongs to something. As a mankind, every individual belong to the place where they born or raise. ‘Belonging’ means that every individual always adopt the life style and culture from the country or a group each individual raised or born. For example, the ways individual eats, how every individual communicate and interact with others. Every place or group has different life style and culture from the other.     Lee, focusing on and adding to the research done by Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, finds that the Balinese people do not work based on commands from leaders. Rather, these people participate in tasks based upon a complex calendar. Each individual “proceeds to act according to his peculiar position in the temporal structure, acting autonomously, finding guidance in the structure” (Lee 9). The structure is not imposed by anyone; all individuals remain inviolable. Rather, individuals tasked as ‘reminders’ do just that, remind others of what is expected in each task. Leaders do not order or coerce work from the common people; in contrast, they act as points of reference in ambiguous matters. This means that permission is not granted from one person to another, the individual decides upon the proper course of action from their interpretation of the greater societal structure. Therefore, individuals exercise a great amount of personal autonomy under this intricate structure, especially in group situations. The person is valued for their personal autonomy and personal participation as part of the larger unit, not how well they follow the orders of those above them.     The findings of the study have huge significance on maintaining peace around the world. Countries around the world have been involved in territorial fights and war to preserve their cultures. All fights emerge from the sense of insecurities that different cultures have. If we can assure ourselves with the understanding that culture provides a firm foundation to any individual’s existence, no matter where that person lives and how long, it can prevent the ongoing cultural battle. At heart the identity of that person is going to be rooted in the culture. This directs to an implication of growing forward to create a global world, welcoming every culture for it is uniqueness, without judgements and prejudices. The major limitation of this study was the convenient sample and its small size. Since the present study was time bound, the future researches could look into doing a more systematic, rigorous and larger sample based study to reflect how cultures can co-exist in a peaceful manner.
