Janet Stone Case Summary
Janet Stone is a 21-year-old female that has a six-month history of heart palpitations, heat intolerance, and increasing nervousness. Although she has a good appetite, the patient has lost twenty pounds within the six months. A year ago, Stone was jogging ten miles per week, but has not done any jogging in the past eight months because she “doesn’t feel up to it.” She also seems to have weakness in her legs. No previous medical problems have been reported (Rashi 2010). The first hypothesis was that Stone has type 2 diabetes. Some symptoms of type 2 diabetes include unexplained weight loss despite proper appetite, weakness, tiredness, and occasional headaches (WebMD, 2008). In an interview, Stone said while walking down the stairs, she had felt her knees let go suddenly, but fortunately did not fall. She also said lately it has been difficult to get out of her beanbag chair. When asked how Stone had been at home, Stone’s mother Beth said Janet had “been tired a lot,” which seems to agree with why Stone hasn’t been jogging (because she “doesn’t feel up to it”).
