A Journey to Jamestown Jamestown was a journey to early 17th century; it was America’s first permanent English colony. Jamestown was founded in 1607 by the Englishmen. It was a four-and-a-half-month voyage from England, and they used 17th century piloting and navigation. They came in boats named, Susan Constant which carried seventy-one people, Godspeed which carried fifty-two people, and Discovery which carried twenty-one and it was also the smallest boat out of the three. 350 men and no women set sail on December 20, 1606, so when they arrived at Jamestown on May during harvest time. Half of the colony perished the first year, and then they faced a brutal winter which let them to trade with the Indians. Indians wanted English tools and the Englishmen at Jamestown needed Indians food. Starving Time—the colonists were afraid to trade with the Indians, they gave up and starved to death. What I learned from this visit was that only 350 men came into Jamestown and survived on an unknown land at first. Also Indians had fire inside their houses to smoke their houses so that mice would not be able to destroy their food. Indians also built canoes made out of Cyprus, most of them grew near the water and they built it with rocks. Indian women farmed while the men fought war with other tribes and they went hunting. I also learned that Chesapeake meant “mother of waters”. Indians also stored food for winter and seeds so that they could harvest when the time came. What I thought was awesome during this time period the smallest boat, Discovery, was able to come from Europe without anyone
