James Bridle: An Analysis Of New Aesthetics
Since the beginning of the world, people, whether they were artists or scientists or just someone who has an inquisitive mind, have always been asking one question: how our future would look like? We are now living in the time that was described in the first sсi-fi books, predicted but scientists and sociologists. But where are the flying cars? Where are the force fields, tractor beams, teleportation pods, antigravity sleds, tricorders, immortality drugs, colonies on Mars, and all the other technological wonders any child growing up in the mid-to-late twentieth century assumed would exist by now? The author of the term is James Bridle claims that New Aesthetic is rather a concept, not a movement and with a term “aesthetic” he means simply – “what it looks like”. He is an expert on digital publishing and a member of the Shoreditch-based design partnership the Really Interesting Group, or RIG, called it a ‘mood board for unknown products’ in a post on the group’s blog. Bridle doesn’t exalt or rebuff but opens up a file folder and shows his collection of images and things that seem to approach a new aesthetic of the future. His initial collection included satellite images, superimposed digital and physical maps, physical goods that look like pixel art, and real shoes made to look as if they were low-polygon 3D renders. His tumblr-blog consists a list of tweets announcing the surprising discovery that the Titanic was a real ocean-liner and not just a film; a histogram of player moods while playing Xbox Live; a Wells Fargo ATM that laments having missed a customer's birthday.
