James and Sons Fine Jewelers is a family owned business that was founded by James Sunderland Sr. in 1964. Mr. Sunderland started out as a small jeweler and rare coin salesman. Eventually James’ daughter Anne and two sons James Jr. and John joined the company and today they have expanded their sales to engagement rings. James and sons Jewelers currently has three locations. Two locations are in the chicagoland area and their third location is in Schererville, Indiana. Smiling and laughing with other colleagues was acceptable. Furthermore, if anything concerned us or caused us to have anything less than than a smile on our faces it could be addressed right away through upward communication. Downward communication was also promoted through weekly meetings, at which our owner Jim was present every sunday. He enjoyed any input and encouraged brainstorming for resolutions; which made me, as a sales support team member, feel valued.
What did you like least? (be professional)
I enjoyed the training process the least. I could have had better formal training; however, due to the timing of my arrival, I had to learn as I performed tasks. I started working at James and Sons during Winter Break. Seeing as though this is a busy time of year for everyone and I was fortunate to begin working at this time, I was remained very appreciative and tried to keep up with the employees and all of my daily tasks. When I came back for the summer my training almost completely consisted of trial and error. But, learning from experience proved to be very beneficial.
