Haiti was born out of struggle beginning in 1791 and lasting beyond 1804. The fight was never an easy one and even after independence, Haiti had many negative factors hindering progression. Haiti's progress was hindered mainly as she was ostracised by the international community. Due to the fact that Haiti was almost entirely cut off from the rest of the world, it was difficult for the country to repay the huge foreign debt in return for independence. The leaders that ruled Haiti after 1804, made decisions that proved to disrupt the growth of the country increasing the rate of corruption. After being monitored closely for a period of time the US invaded Haiti on July 28, 1915 for reasons which including keeping European powers out of the Caribbean, ensuring Germany doesn’t make its influence in the Caribbean through Haiti permanent and political power would give the US lucrative trade power.…

The impact of West Indian slavery on the cultural landscape of the Caribbean cannot be under estimated or taken for granted. In the entire discourse on West Indian slavery, it is often taken for granted that the discussion centers solely on enslaved Africans. However, slavery brought to the region not only African but Europeans (Spaniards, French and British) and consequent to its abolition, there was the advent of the east Indians. We see the impact of their influence in the names of places; the foods we eat; our music and dance; our arts and craft, gender and sexuality. As these and other anecdotal evidences are examined and the academic contributions of others are analysed, Caribbean culture will be clearly defined and its origin established. Slavery and its attending impact upon Caribbean culture have been both positive and negative as remnants of the social/class system of the “plantocracy” linger and take deeper root in the Caribbean community, in general and the Jamaican landscape, in particular.…

The opportunity to study abroad in Ghana was very unexpected. Studying abroad, especially in a place as meaningful as Africa, was something that I have always dreamed about but knew would never happen. Living in poverty meant study abroad opportunities were beyond my reach; I find financing my local college education challenging in itself. However, since I have been in college, I have realized I can do anything I set my mind to, and this is why I am applying to study abroad in Ghana through The College at Brockport.…

Our Nation’s Attainment of Independence in 1962 marked the end of colonial rule that had started during the 16th century under the aegis of Spain and had continued when the British captured Trinidad. In the meantime, Tobago had its own uneven political history, changing hands from one European power to another whilst having its own bicameral elective legislature from as early as 1768. As Crown Colony governance became tighter from the mid-19th century that melancholy isle was deprived of its bicameral legislature in 1874 and in 1877 was made a purely nominative, one-chambered Crown Colony legislature. In 1889, Tobago was united administratively with Trinidad in order to reduce British expenses in the Caribbean and in 1899 the noose was further tightened when that colony was made a ward of Trinidad and Tobago. From the beginning of the 20th century, Tobago joined Trinidad in advocating freedom from colonial rule, becoming an integral part of the achievement on Independence in 1962.…

In an individuals life, 53 years is growth from a toddler through adolescence into adulthood and then maturity. This is the so-called jubilee’ at which success or progress is measured and celebrated. But for Nigeria as a country, it is not clear what we are celebrating; is it success, progress or maturity? Be that as it may I feel very strongly about the progress (or lack of it) so far recoded by the Country in the last 98 years, and I would rely mainly on my personal experiences in the last 50 years and what I learn from professionals like Sam Nda Isiah who try to analyze events and issues concerning the country.…
