What are the reasons why you are attending college?
Attending college doesn’t means that you are smart. Not smart as in smart but smart as you choose the right way. The way you want to be successful in the future or to be a breadwinner of the family. You come to school because you believe that you can make a difference in your community. This essay examines or analyzes the cause and effects of learning new cultures, class assessments, and experience college life.
The first reason is learning new culture. This is a great example of our own college here at the national campus. There are over 750 students from the four FSM states attending the college every semester and these students came from bi-lingual and multi-lingual backgrounds. These students come together not just to graduate but to learn different cultures of all the states. A best way to capture all these things is during the cultural day. All states including the outer islands of Pohnpei come together to perform their culture. Culture is a very important thing to us Micronesians. For example in Pohnpei, Sakau is used to solve problems between families or traditional leaders.
The second reason of going to college is class assessments. At home, we have many things to do. We do farming, taking care of family, fishing, etc. But it is also important to go to college to learn things other things like Math, English and Computer because we cannot depend or the land itself at least we know something else. For example, if we want to conduct a research about our breadfruit we need math (statistics), English and computer skills. We need math or statistics to keep our data correct and neat. We also need English and computer skills to keep the record. And it is shame when other foreign people tell us the news about our breadfruit. This is the time we need to stand up lead our people. Doing this might help increase our gross domestic

At one point in time it was easy for any American to get a job with little to know education experience. Times have changed however, and a college education is necessary for almost every job not in the fast food department. By the time you finish college for a certain job, the criteria could have easily changed making it to where you need an even higher education before getting the job of your dreams. Andrew Delbanco, Author of “Three Reasons College Still Matters” an article in his book, College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be, points out three main reasons why every American should attend college at some point in their life. Peering into an 8:00 am class full of freshman college students, many observations can be made. There are students with their heads down, (obviously still listening to the professor) students with their pencils racing, students with their minds wondering, and students with their attention to the teacher. As one might note, not all students have their mind focused on what they paid for. Some people go through college as a party or just because it’s become one of societies “norms”; others have a set goal in mind. However, if used to its best ability, college allows one to gain an advantage over high school diploma holders, by attaining the knowledge, skillsets, and tools to achieve or explore their career goals.…

Many students go to college with the sole intention to get their degree, become employed, and earn a higher salary. Students with these intentions tend to struggle more throughout their college years. Students go to college because they obtain skills and characteristics that employers find desirable. These skills and characteristics also allow them to function in society. Making the leap from high school classrooms to college campuses can be difficult for many students simply because college professors expect so much more inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go to college are expected to be self-sufficient from the day they get there. At the collegiate level, students should come to class ready to participate, engage in the course…

Menand’s first theory explains that college is a sorting-out mechanism that is based on intelligence. He suggests that college is a “four-year intelligence test”, at the end of which, each student receives a single score in the form of a “G.P.A. that professional schools and employers can trust as a measure of intellectual capacity”. College should be a challenging way to sift through students; a process to find the most academically accomplished students for elite schools and future employers. This theory describes a systematic evaluation of test taking and hoop jumping. Those who favor this viewpoint agree that there are many people that are not prepared for a college education.…

More people than ever before are attending college due to the endless opportunities that it provides. Louis Menand, a college professor and the author of “Live and Learn: Why We Have College,” explains the meaning of college through three theories that have been developed. Theory 1 supports the idea of the sorting-out process that separates the highly intelligent from the less intelligent. Menand’s second theory explains that college provides opportunities for developmental growth, personal growth, and teaches individuals about the world around us. These are valuable lessons that will not be learned anywhere else. Theory three supports the idea of people attending college to specialize in a specific vocation. I am a firm believer in Menand’s second theory. I believe that college should enlighten students in various ways to make for well-rounded members of society, that college leads individuals to the path of self discovery, and everyone should have an opportunity to attend college.…

Since elementary school, students are taught so that they can one day attend to a good college. However, the question is: is college the best option? Many would say that it is, including authors David Leonhardt of The New York Times and Freeman Hrabowski, author of "Colleges Prepare People for Life". Even though David Leonhardt and Freeman Hrabowski both address the idea that college is worth it in the long run, Leonhardt provides a further convincing argument by revealing where exactly college fits into our constantly growing society, using persuasive word choice, and constantly incorporating facts and statistics.…
