    Aquaculture in Thailand

Thailand is the largest shrimp producer in Southeast Asia with shrimp farms developed along the Thai coastline (Graslund, 2001). The shrimp farms are about 80,000 hectares, and since 1992, Thailand has produced from 150,000 to 220,000 tons of shrimp every year (Graslund, 2001). Ninety percent of the shrimp is exported to Japan, America, Europe, and other Asian countries, and shrimp export is one of the main agriculture products bringing money to the country (Graslund, 2001). However, the development of this industry has caused environmental hazards from antibiotics and pesticides, and these chemicals are mainly used to protect the shrimps from diseases and maintain the water quality (Cole, 2009 and Graslund, 2001).These chemicals can be toxic or mutagenic on the wild flora and fauna, and antibiotics can cause resistance and changing the micro-organism composition in the aquatic environment (Graslund, 2001).…

Indian aquaculture has been evolving from the level of subsistence activity to that of an industry. This transformation has been made possible with the development and standardization of many new production and associated techniques of input and output subsystems. In recent years aquaculture has created great enthusiasm and interest among entrepreneurs especially for shrimp farming in coastal areas. Shrimp farming is capital intensive activity and uncontrolled mushrooming growth of it has led to outbreak of diseases and attributed environmental issues calling for closure of shrimp farms.…

    Fishery Sector in Pakistan

    • 3988 Words

Aquaculture is a rather recent activity in Pakistan and is still in its infancy; nevertheless there is immense potential for development of the sector. Despite its vast fresh, brackish and marine water resources only carp culture is practiced in inland waters and only on a limited scale, carp are cultured in earthen ponds, using mostly extensive farming practices with very little inputs. In Pakistan, the fish fauna is rich but only seven warm water species and two cold water species are cultivated on a commercial scale. Trials experimenting with shrimp culture have been carried out in the Indus delta region but it did not succeed due to the non-availability of hatchery-produced seed.…
