Jack Merridew Lord Of The Flies Analysis
One way William Golding adds depth to Lord of the Flies is by drawing attention to important elements using irony. An example of this is through the character Jack Merridew, who is both the first one to suggest the creation of rules and the first to break them. During the boys’ second meeting on the island, Jack excitedly suggests that they have rules and that there should be a punishment when someone breaks them. One of the rules that is established is to keep the signal fire going. However, when it is Jack’s turn to keep the signal fire going, he abandons his post to hunt a pig.
