Jack London : Biography

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club" (BrainyQuote). This is one of Jack London's more well known quotes. Jack London was born as John Griffith Chaney on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco("Jack London"). His mother was Flora Wellman and his father was suspected to be astrologer William H. Chaney, who denied his paternity and abandoned London's mother(Wilson). London was suckled, or nursed, by an ex-slave named Virginia Prentiss, who remained close to London for the rest of his life ("Jack London International"). London had been born into a poor family, who had moved around constantly. His mother married John London. London was given his stepfather's last name, and gained two stepsisters, Eliza and Ida London. In 1878, Jack and Eliza suffer from near-fatal accounts of diphtheria (Wilson). Then, at age five in 1881, Jack London had his first experience with alcohol, getting drunk out of a beer pail he was supposed to take to his stepfather. London narrowly escaped being beheaded when stumbling along next to the plough his stepfather was driving(Walker).

It is when the family moved to Oakland, London at age ten, that he started his first job, selling newspapers. He was known to visit Johnny Heinold at Johnny's First and Last Chance Saloon on the waterfront, and was an avid reader at the Oakland Free Library (Wilson). He changed his name from "Johnny" to "Jack" in 1887(Wilson). He continued to do odd jobs to earn money. London started working a job in a salmon cannery in 1890, earning ten cents an hour(Walker). "I do not live for what the world thinks of me, but for what I think of myself." In 1891 he bought a ship and began to work as an oyster pirate on the ship, called "The Razzle Dazzle". He became so good that he was referred to as the "Prince of the Oyster Pirates"("Jack London International"). He did not mind that he was breaking the law, because he was content with being payed as he broke

Both Chris McCandless and Jack London left to go into the wilderness to find their true selves. They both also had serious family issues, with McCandless’ father having a secret other family, and London’s mother attempting to shoot themselves. It is a possibility that through this they learned that humans are unpredictable, and unreliable, and as a result, they preferred to be in solitude for long periods of time, so that they would no longer be subjected to the random whims of other people.…

The “Roaring Twenties” were a time of great change and progress in America’s social culture. Society faced a revolution in several areas. Women, for example, after gaining the right to vote, dropped old modest ways and transformed their morals, becoming freer with dress and attitude. Furthermore, music was revolutionized with the new melodies of jazz and blues. Even religion became less constricted, as creationism was questioned by many Americans. Additionally, one of the most developed areas of the 1920’s was black culture and literature. The “New Negro Movement” and the Harlem Renaissance, the literary and artistic aspect of this movement, transformed the mindset of America’s black population, encouraging them to embrace their own culture. Artists, writers, and musicians fueled this fire, adding their original artwork to encourage black individuality. Langston Hughes, one of the most celebrated black writers of the time, expressed this cultural movement in his article The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain, encouraging African Americans to be proud of their race.…

Jack London [John Griffith Chaney] was born January 12, 1876 and died November 22, 1916. His mother was of unmarried and of a wealthy background. Jack was brought up by an ex-slave in an infancy way, due to his mother’s illness. Jack London’s biography clearly shows that his early life was in poverty. He has worked as a factory worker, oyster pirate, Fish Patrol, sailor, railroad hobo, gold prospector, and may other labourer jobs. It was this background that later transformed him into a socialist. He worked at various hard labour jobs [just like Stephen night in Aloha Oe who had many job descriptions – entertainer, surf instructor, volcanic hill climber etc]. He was instrumental in breaking the taboo over leprosy and popularizing Hawaii as a tourist spot. Thus in his story he describes the norm type culture of singing the Aloha Oe song as a farewell of Tourists and expatriates and entertainment. His travels to Hawaii with his second wife Charmian Kittredge, was when he wrote the story. He had many visits to Hawaii with his second wife Charmian “Including a 1907 cruise on the yacht Snark to Hawaii”.I believe that Aloha Oe may have been part of this visit on the yacht. He may have had an experience with the entertainment that was described in the story. Many of London's stories are based on his visits to Hawaii, the last one for 10 months beginning in December 1915. After reading about Jack London I thought for a while that he may have been racist as a website I went to had an article that accused jack to be a racist but then the story “ALOHA OE” shows a different picture. when he wrote the story he may have been thing of his rocking marriage with Bessie" Maddern and how he thought he would have made it work regardless of them not being in LOVE. Bessie and Jack were not a compatible match through age, social class and many other things. They were just good friends and Jack said that he will…
