Joseph Worthington Elliot Wallace (J.W.E Wallace) was born on April 8, 1796, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After serving in a war, he lived in Mississippi and was the colonel of the militia there. In 1830, he moved to Texas as a United States consul and would join Stephen F. Austin's colony. In the Autumn of 1835, he guided a group of men to Gonzales, where he was elected lieutenant colonel. During the battle of Gonzales, he had joint command of an army with Colenel John H. Moore. In his later years, he would serve as a correspondent to Thomas Jefferson Rusk on the subject matter regarding Indian attacks, a delegate in Richmond regarding the construction of a railroad, and was an office commander in the battle of Plum Creek.
