Franny and Zooey, written by J.D Salinger, is a story about a brother trying to help his sister get over her religious breakdown. Franny Glass is an actress who uses her religious stories to get rid of her problems. Zooey Glass is an actor who attempts to help his sister understand that her religious book isn’t the answer to everything. Franny uses her book to comfort her when she’s in the middle of a breakdown, but Zooey thinks she’s taking the book a little bit too far. As Franny catches up with her boyfriend, Lane Coutell, readers will notice the tension between the young couple. There are multiple cases shown to help readers understand that Franny and Lane are unhappy together. When Franny comes to visit her boyfriend, Lane, she gives …show more content…
Instead, Salinger leaves readers curious to figuring out why they are unhappy. It’s clear to see that Lane easily becomes irritated when Franny tries to speak her mind as Salinger writes, “Franny saw that he was irritated, and to what extent, but, for the moment, with equal parts of self-disapproval and malice, she felt like speaking her mind.” This statement gives the impression that Lane is an impatient person. Lane constantly interrupts Franny and never listens to her. Lane asks about Franny’s book and while she explains the plot of the story Lane is only focused on one thing, his food. The only time Lane shows that he cares is after Franny returns from the restroom looking pale. Even then Lane shows the same attitude he did when they first got to the restaurant. After Franny faints Lane finally realizes that something is wrong and does everything to make sure she is alright. Even though their relationship seems like they have a little bump in the road it is clear that they are unhappy from the attitude to Lane’s disrespect.
