Ivanhoe Rebecca Characteristics
"His features relaxed in their usual severity as he gazed upon the beautiful creature defending herself with so much spirit and courage" (Scott 330). Out of all the characters in the novel Ivanhoe, Rebecca is the character I most admire. Throughout the novel, Rebecca exhibits many qualities that show her to be a very strong and well-loved character. Rebecca displays beauty, strength, honor, courage, and generosity which gain her the respect and attention of many.
In the novel, Ivanhoe, it is said that "Rebecca might indeed have compared with the proudest beauties of England" (Scott 71). Many men, especially Brian de Bois-Guilbert, are attracted to her because of her beauty. Even Ivanhoe, despite his undying love for the Lady Rowena, is attracted to Rebecca. Lucas Beaumanoir is even affected by her beauty and shows pity on her when she is convicted of witchcraft. As well as physical beauty, Rebecca shows she has a beautiful and kind heart.

Even when she was going to be burned at the stake, she never once was tempted to renounce her faith. When everyone was against her and thought her to be a witch and that she should be put to death, she showed she had the courage to withstand it. She is a strong-willed and courageous woman who does not let men take advantage of

Usually during the seventeenth-century, siblings were very competitive towards each other to later in life acquire their parent’s fortunes and estates. However Rebecca did allow Thomas to move into her house with his family, but she kept the most expensive and valuable thing in the house to herself. “Her possession of the great bed suggests that she keenly aware of her place in this household, although what she claimed by right would have been perceived as self-indulgence by her son and daughter-in-law. Such rivalry only fueled the antagonism between mother and son, as furniture became a symbolic weapon in the contest for control over people and space (Cream 14-15). Clearly Rebecca knew that she was at the head of this household, unlike what usually was known at this time, for the man of the house to be at the head. Thomas probably didn’t feel a sense of manhood living in this house. People around town also knew this and he didn’t like the fact that his mother was the one that had all the power over the family, which in return gave him motivate to kill his…

The novel becomes surreal when Lewis develops the story in a twisting way. Lewis turned the table on Orual’s association with ugliness when she becomes queen. The once monstrous person is humanized by showing her better qualities as a capable queen. The now entitled queen is given beauty when she is veiled, “her veil hid the face of a pretty woman” (223). Now only judged for her actions, kind and wise, she is considered beautiful by fairytale standards.…

“So she turned away by an impatient husband whom his sheep meant more than his wife…..As she had followed him, gently forcing her way into the shrubbery, she had suddenly come upon a glade in the midst of it, a narrow space like a small alcove with hangings of thick green and golden brocade, big enough to hold two or three people in it...Sigismund would look for her in all direction; he would be unable to understand what had become of her and for a minute, for a short minute - or, perhaps, if she was firm and cruel enough, for five - he would realize what a vio, what an unendurably sad and horrible place the universe would be when she was no longer in it.” (pg 227-228) This shows us that she seeking nothing much attention, that she constantly has to be have reassurance of her worth in the world.…
