It's Kind Of A Funny Story Analysis
First person allows the reader to be able to read the thoughts of the main character. Readers are allowed to to look in the eyes of the eyes of the protagonist. Good authors use first person to feel a way or develop thinking similar to the main character. Ned Vizzini, author of It’s Kind of a Funny Story, uses the first person view to help develop the character and find out what Greg is thinking.
The story is about a young male, named Greg,who suffers from disorders such as depression. Greg is slowly getting worse due to his imagination going wild with the bizarre thoughts. Most readers can sympathize with Greg and how he is feeling. Without first person perspective we would not know why or what he thinks about what he is about to do. Plus, We would not know his connection to toy soldiers. Greg shows schizophrenic qualities such as a toy soldier general talking to him in his mind. For example, “‘Hey soldier, what’s the matter? I can’t sleep and I can’t eat sir . . .’”( 29). Without this view , we would miss all of the information the general gives. We learn that Greg has trouble eating and keeping his food down. This leads to an eating disorder. Soldiers become a figure in Greg’s life. They become beneficial and harmful. They often show up and give “advice” to Greg. Even though it is mostly harmful.With first person we also learn of the addition that have been done. In addition Greg’s almost first kiss experience. To explain, “For my first kiss, I didn't want to settle.Julie opened her eyes. ‘Are you okay man’ she asked. ‘Yeah, yeah, I’m just. . . Whew, I’m drunk and stoned, Julie.’”(79).
