Unit 5 My name has a meaning

Many people never think about the name they were given by their parents. I believe that a name can help mold you into what you become but not determine who you will be. I will discuss my first and middle name, my last name, and finally what experts say about the power of a name. My first name, is onyekachi it’s an Nigerian name… I know your looking like “Wow” what kind of name is that well it’s a really powerful name my mom gave me it means “who’s greater than God”.
My mom said the reason why she gave me this name was because when she had me I was something special to her because I wasn’t planned I’m not supposed to be here right now God blessed her with me so when she gave me the name Onyekachi I was a blessing from God. In Nigeria it’s a really traditional place everybody names mean something coming from Africa and moving to America was a totally whole different environment. When I attend a school I try to make my teachers call me Cynthia that’s my American name I go by some of my teachers would look at me and be like I rather just call you Cynthia because I don’t know how to pronounce your first name and I used to get shy and be scared to tell people my real name cause I felt like they would make fun of me which they did, but as the years passed by I just got used to the name onyekachi I start realizing I need to start being happy with the name my mom gave me instead of being scared to say it to people as I started telling people my name they would tell me my name was really unique and different and pretty so that’s when I started being comfortable with my name.
My mom used to tell me the reason why she gave me the name Cynthia was because “it represents the talented and beautiful classy woman that you are!” people wouldn’t even think my name would be Cynthia cause I don’t look like a Cynthia my mom said that name fits me and I should represent my name every were I go and

Bonnie Wach’s article, “What’s in a Name” explores the impact of how names can affect a person. As some may know, many parents try individualizing a child by separating those…

The author was born in Iran, but later moved to the United States at age 7. She first introduces us to the exotic names that some members in her family have and how at a young age the other children used to make of their names. After the brief background on them she goes into detail how her name “Firoozeh” was frequently mispronounced or sometimes not said because Americans deemed it “unpronounceable”. The constant abuse and mockery of her name was too much for her so she decide to Americanize her name to “Julie”. After some time the name Julie was working for her, but there was something inside her that felt fake. She did not feel she was being her real self. She eventually dropped “Julie” from her name, but had to re-add the name to her resume when she was applying for a job. Even though she was probably more qualified than some people applying she need to add the name in order to receive a job. Time passed and she dropped “Julie” again an went back to her birth name “Firoozeh”. By then she did not care whether people did not know her name, plus she also lived in Silicon Valley; a place where un-“American” names are…

From birth, a name is a powerful piece of who a person is. The name that is given to a person is what helps identifies one from another. My name, Daneisha Chanel Rayford, is what describes me as a person, and I could never picture myself with another one. I would like to consider my first name Daneisha to be unique. It is one of those names that most people fail to spell right. However, I can honestly say there are not many Daneisha’s in this world. In my opinion, how I was given the name Daneisha is the most unique thing about me.…

One’s power and position in a society can give them the “right” or ability to name or un-name a person. Someone can gain this right by his or her status socially, financially, and even racially. If it’s their own child, of course, they have every right in the world to name him or her. But in some cultures, as is evident in “No Name Woman”, they have the right to take away someone’s name if they have disgraced their family and/or community. A name is very significant because it gives a person a sense of who they are, an identity. In “No Name Woman”, Kingston’s aunt had no identity except for the story her mother told her and in “Mary” Marguerite’s new boss, Mrs. Cullinan changed her name to Mary which then, in a way, removed Marguerite’s original identity and gave her a new one, one she didn’t want.…

After we are born, we receive our own names. Names are chosen not by themselves, but by their family member’s. That is the first gift the baby owns and of course, it is free, but not everybody takes the free gift if they don't like it. Just like me and the girl I had read about in the article, “My Name," by Sandra Cisneros. We both don’t like our names because our names are not English names; indeed, it’s the different culture name.…

I really love my last name because of how unique it is. The crazy thing about my last name is that if you know anyone that has the last name Ohai, they are definitely related to me and the rest of my family. There is no other person (who isn’t realated) that has the last name Ohai. So just remember, if you ever meet anyone in your lifetime that has the last name Ohai, they are related to me in some type of way. I like that I am a guy because then when I get married, I won’t have to worry about me getting/changing my last name from Ohai to something…

My dad was the person that named me Brian. Knowing him, I was pretty lucky to get a normal name. I’m surprised that it wasn’t something strange or funny-sounding. My siblings have pretty normal names too. My brother is William and my sister is Jennifer. My middle name is Robert. It was given to me because it is my father’s name, and his middle name is his father’s name, and so on. I guess my parents wanted to keep the tradition. My last name is Guedes. It has run in the family for as long as I can remember. My last name is Cuban, just like everyone in my family. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, ect. are all fully Cuban and I’m proud of that.…

School of Rock. Seeing those words on my calendar made me dread the weeks to come. My parents had signed me up for an activity, once again, without asking my opinion first. My friends would be going, but that didn’t make it sound better. I would be put in a band with people I didn't know. I’d always left being outgoing and meeting new people for my friends to take care of, but this week it seemed to be on my to-do list.…

How many uncomfortable situations would I avoid by changing it, or scraping it off of my life once and for all. I guess it would make a substantial 180 degree turn in my life, but I would rather get interrogated a thousand times than change my last name. Aside from being something I was immediately born with, it is one of the few things that define me as an individual. Though not many look at it my way, I proudly hold on to it due to the enormous significance it holds. This word is a synonym for family and unity, which is the foundation of everything around me. With this, being content is the most important aspect a person has to focus on. Personally, my family brings joyfulness into my heart and is the one that can push me away from darkness. They are the building blocks who have helped me grow and stood by me since I was first born. Metaphorically speaking, my last name is the honorable representation of who I am as a person and the relationship I have with the people around me. So, why would I give up something so precious for the avoidance of something so…

I've always wondered what it would be like to have a different name. I always see names that I think are so cool, spunky, or pretty sounding, but I always realize that they would never fit me. Delaney is the perfect name to describe me, no other names fit. Maybe it's because I'm a little bias, but I think that Delaney is such a great name. I mean, there's a reason that there's four of them at our school. Delaney has been with me since before I was born, it's my name and I'm proud of it. Even though I may think other names are cool, nothing would fit me better then the name I had…

When she initially told me about this problem I could not fathom how a name could cause issues. She told me that she had been experiencing this issue since she was in college. She would send emails to faculty members at her university asking to talk about research opportunities and would never receive a response. Her mother told her she should try “using another name”. She immediately started sending emails to the same faculty members ,but this time using a stereotypical white name and immediately received emails back. She told me she recieved one email back within 6 minutes. Her name is Asha a common name in the nigerian culture that she said means “lively woman”. Studies show that Asha is not the only one who has encountered this problem. CNN wrote an article in may of last year explaining four common ways people may display hidden bias , and this example was one of them. Students with stereotypically “black”-sounding names tend to be labeled as troublemakers by teachers. Job applicants with such names are less likely than their white-sounding counterparts to get called in for interviews. Thus showing that unconscious biases penetrate various realms of society from hiring decisions to medical…

    uniqueness in names

Names are the single most important things in a person’s life. They can dictate your whole life, from the relationships you develop to the opportunities in life that you are offered. A person with a unique/different name may not make friends as easily and may not be as social because of the shame of having a different name. The drama that comes with unique names is a lot to handle for some because of how people butcher the pronunciation of your name or maybe even how others might make fun of it. With a name like Anmol I can tell you how both those reasons held me back as a child and made me hate my name. It was hard introducing myself to others because the sounds my name were not natural and I had to pronounce it in a way that didn’t scare the person off. Being such a social and friendly kid I had to resort to my nickname of Mol which has stuck with me for so long that my full name seems like a distant past. My nickname just sounds better and I feel much more confident when introducing myself. This goes to show that names can boost or decrease your confidence and cloud your identity if you don’t know how to make the name your own but if you do and show others that judging you by your name is not the same as knowing you and your personality then anything is possible for you as an individual. Though my nickname makes me feel more comfortable I am coming to the realization that I am the owner of the name and the name does not own me.…
