Item analysis is a process which examines student responses to individual test items (questions) in order to assess the quality of those items and of the test as a whole.

1) Item Difficulty(Di)
The percentage of pupils who got the item right

2) Item Discriminating Power (Dp)
Indicates the difference between high and low achievers

Item analysis procedures for classroom test
1. Score the papers and rank them from highest to lowest.
2. Separate the top third and bottom third of the papers.
3. Tally the responses made to each test item by each individual in

the upper third group.
4. Tally the responses made to each test by individual in the lower

third group.
5. Count those in the upper group that got the item right and call it

U.
6. Count those in the lower group that got the item right and call it L.

For Item Difficulty (Di)
•7. Add U and L divided by the total of those who answered

in U and L and the result is the difficulty index of the item. where: R = the number of students who got the item right
T = the total number of students who tried the item

For Item Discriminating Power (Dp)
8. Subtract the L percentage from the U percentage and

the result is the discriminating index or the discriminating power (Dp) of the test item.
