PHASE 3 DISCUSSION BOARD 1: PURPOSE OF NETWORK MODELS
COLORADO TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
IT245-1404B-01: INTRODUCTION TO NETWORK MANAGEMENT
For phase 3 discussion board we are ask to describe and compare the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model with another network model. For this assignment I will use the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model. These models divide the communication process of the network into smaller parts. This helps with design, development, and troubling shooting. The OSI model has 7 layers- 1) Physical, 2) Data Link, 3) Network, 4) Transport, 5) Session, 6) Presentation, 7) Application. The TCP/IP model has 4 layers.
Layer 1 - The Network Access Layer combines functions from the three lower layers of the OSI model (Network Layer, Data Link Layer, and Physical Layer.) It defines the protocols for physical data transmission and mapping IP address to the hardware address (MAC address). Used on the network.
Layer 2 -The Internet layer corresponds to layer 3 (Network Layer) of the OSI model. It is assigning IP addresses to host machines on the network, responsible for transmission of packets over multiple networks as well the LAN.

Layer 3- The Transport layer correlates to layer 4(Transport Layer) of the OSI model. It is responsible for the reliability, control of data flow , and data integrity.

Layer 4 - The Application layer is the top layer, it closely correlate with the functions of the top three layers of the OSI Model (Session layer, Presentation layer, Application layer). It is responsible for handling high-level protocols, supports network applications and provides for users and other programs an interface and how they interact with the lower layers.
