Circuit Switching and Packet Switching

Circuit Switching and Packet Switching
Circuit switching, although more reliable than packet-switching because it is able to get your message across without any hiccups, is old and expensive. Circuit switching is based on having a dedicated line or session between two stations and thus, you are able to get the full message across without congestion or interruptions. An example of circuit switching hardware is PBX. In addition, with circuit switching, a path to the destination is already decided upon before the transmission starts and it only terminates once the session is complete and sends its message through. A disadvantage of circuit switching is that you are only able to use the line or transmit one session at a time because of its dedicated circuit. Another disadvantage is its cost.
Packet switching is more modern and transmits voice data. Although, as compared to circuit switching, the quality may be lower because of the ability to use lines or sessions at the same time and thus, creating congestion or even data loss. With packet switching there is no circuit dedication like circuit switching. However, unlike circuit switching where the path to the destination is already decided upon before transmission, with packet switching, each packet has to find its own route to the destination. The disadvantage of packet switching is the potential for low quality transmissions and even data loss.
In my opinion, these days, packet switching is more commonly used because it is used in LAN technologies or set ups. I would think that circuit switching is used for analog lines and networks, but during these days where most organizations are changing to digital and especially VoIP, packet switching would be more common.

Now I will discuss some advantages and disadvantages of Hybrid Topologies. With a network you can set up with wires or wireless. Being wireless will help you to connect many devices including phones and printers. Being wireless gives you the choice to move around more without having to worry about how long your wires are or how tangled they are. Also if you have a wireless connection is that you will not have problems with the signal it’s always there. You can run a wire 100 meters before you would need to boost your signal. With a wired connection you will have more speed. The wire is made of copper this makes it last a long time and wire is more secure, everyone knows that security is very important on any computer. The equipment for a wired connection is cheaper so while the wires cost more the equipment cost less.…

Circuit switched services are the oldest approach to MAN and WAN circuits. They began operating over the PSTN or the Public Switched Telephone Network that carriers like AT&T, and Bell South ran on. A simple telephone call is based off of this premise. Circuit switched services rely on cloud architecture. This means that the users must lease connection points into the common carrier network, and then a person/computer dials the phone number of the destination and provides a temporary circuit. The circuit becomes disconnected when the computers are done exchanging data(phone is hung up). The two basic types of switched Circuit Services we use are POTS and ISDN. POTS or Plain Old Telephone Service, is referred to as dial up you may be familiar with. ISDN is the Integrated Digital Services Network. It combines voice, video and data on the same digital circuit. (Fitzgerald, 297-298).…

But each of these sectors evolve in different standards. For example, a fixed link uses based on voice over wires while mobile communication use data transfer protocols through radio (for example GSM, CDMA, 3G, LTE). The Internet also is transmitted through the wire but it uses more advanced technology, communications and data transfer protocols and dominant of these is the IP protocol. In turn, TV broadcasting at the moment is in transition from analog to digital television.…

Time Space Time (TST) switches are a particularly useful configuration of switching elements providing both time and space translation between channels of Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) telecommunications transmission lines. A TST switch interconnects digital bi-directional TDM communication lines with TDM communication involving the sharing of single transmission paths, individually, in time to provide multiple channels in a single transmission medium. This is a fundamental system improvement in telephone communications that should prove helpful in reducing cost of ordinary telephone service, and in enhancing the ability to provide many new kinds of service in meeting expanded communications needs. Electromechanical crossbar and relay switching systems, as generally used today in telecommunications switching have, for practical purposes, reached the limit of their capabilities. Extensive, continued adherence to these older technologies severely restricts capability, and greatly increases costs of telecommunication systems; and, particularly so with the expansion to systems of great size and complexity. While many advances have been made in capability and efficiency in the transmission area, with microwave, satellite, and high-capacity cable, and with both analog and digital repeaters and terminals being used, the exchange plant, including switching equipment in central offices and branch exchanges, remain in essence the same as in…

Packet switching is a digital networking communications method that groups all transmitted data, regardless of content type or structure, into suitably sized blocks called packets. Packet switching is the basic technology behind the internet. Packet switching was created by a man name Leonard Kleinrock. Kleinrock, a New York native, has impacted the start of the internet. Packet switching started with his doctorial thesis, which was published into a book two years later. He says for his PhD research he established the mathematical theory of packet switching.…

Father of Packet SwitchingAlthough not much research exists on the creation and development of packet switching, it is for certain it has revolutionize the world of today. Technological advances are greatly increasing the many possibilities for business firms to conduct overseas activities. Who created such a machine that would catapult the world into more of an internet-based society than a social society, you may ask yourself? Many scientists and professors accounted for its development but there is only one professor that was able to send the first message via internet: Leonard Kleinrock! The following essay will touch upon the biography of his works/achievements, early, education, and awards received by such an ingenious man, who still lives among us.…

The Internet began to evolve when packet-switching networks came into operation in the 1960s. When transmitted, data is broken up into small packets, sent to its destination and then reassembled. In this way a single signal can be sent to multiple users. Packets can be compressed for speed and encrypted for security.…
