Breeding these animals in a safe environment increases the population until it is big enough to be released back into the wild. For example the population of the giant panda was rapidly decreasing from deforestation. Breeding programs were established and now the population of giant pandas is stabilising. In this way, keeping an animal in a cage is helping the survival of the species.
Keeping an animal in a zoo inclosure is not cruel because it allows normal people to learn about these creatures. Even though these animals are in a smaller space than the wild they have an improved standard of living. They have guaranteed shelter, food and even medical check-ups!
