INTRODUCTION
This study explores the functions of the two determiners of Waray, namely ‘IT’ and ‘AN’. While it is observed in Tagalog that the presence of ‘ang’ in the construction denotes what element of the sentences is topicalized, it has been recognized in Waray that the two determiners carry the same function. With the use of Role and Reference grammar, an approach that takes algorithmic maps from semantics to syntax and from syntax to semantics. This is an idealization of what a speaker does (semantics to syntax) and what a hearer does (Van Valin,n.d P:3). In this paper we shall analyze when the determiner ‘it’ should be used as opposed to ‘an’ and vice-versa, with regards to the types of construction using the semantic macro-roles under this approach.

1.1 General Introduction to Waray
Waray (or Waray-Waray) is a Philippine language spoken in the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar, Leyte, and Biliran. According to the 2000 Census of Ethnologue, Waray has an estimated number of 2.5 million speakers of Waray( Lewis, 2009). Tracing its language family, Waray-waray is a Central Bisayan branch of the Bisayan subgroup. Bisayan is a subgroup of Central Philippine which is a subgroup of the Meso Philippine group. Meso Philippine group then, is a subgroup of the Western Malayo-Polynesian branch. Western Malayo-Polynesian branch which is a subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian subfamily belongs to the Austronesian language family (Zorc, 1975).

1.2 Objectives of the Study
This study aims to analyze the use of 2 of the Determiners of Waray, the ‘IT’ and ‘AN’ and study the similarities and differences of these

Wáray-Wáray (commonly spelled as Warai; also referred to as Winaray or Lineyte-Samarnon) or Samarnon is a language spoken in the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, and in the north-east of Leyte Island (surrounding Tacloban) in the Philippines. The name comes from the word often heard by non-speakers, "waray" (meaning "none", "nothing" or "not"), in the same way that Cebuanos are known in Leyte as "mga Kana" (after the oft-heard word "kana", meaning "that", among people speaking the Cebuano language).…

STRIPPING & NEGATIVE CONTRAST IN LIBYAN ARABIC* ALI ALGRYANI (Newcastle University) Abstract This study discusses two cases of clausal ellipsis referred to as stripping and negative contrast in Libyan Arabic (LA)1. The paper argues that both constructions can be derived by focus movement of the remnant out of TP plus deletion of that TP (Merchant 2003). The behaviour of the remnant with respect to preposition stranding, binding and locality effects can be taken as an argument in favour of this analysis. However, despite the fact that both stripping and negative contrast involve TP ellipsis, the two differ with respect to interaction with information structure, that is, while the remnant in stripping is perceived as new informational focus, the remnant in negative contrast is interpreted contrastively. 1. Introduction This paper discusses two types of clausal ellipsis referred to as stripping and negative contrast with special focus on their syntactic properties and distribution, on the one hand, and interaction with information structure on the other. The paper is organised as follows: section 1 introduces stripping from a crosslinguistic perspective. Section 2 presents cases of stripping and negative contrast in Libyan Arabic, while section 3 discusses stripping in syntactic theory and reviews previous analyses of the phenomenon. Section 4 discusses the interaction between ellipsis and information structure. Section 5 provides an account for stripping and negative contrast. Finally, section 6 presents the conclusion. 1.1. Stripping: a crosslinguistic perspective Hankamer and Sag (1976: 409) define stripping as ‘a rule that deletes everything in a clause under identity with corresponding parts of the preceding clause, except for one constituent, (and sometimes a clause-initial adverb or negative).’ Stripping, which is also referred to as ‘bare argument ellipsis’ (BAE), is widespread…

    Presupposition in Semantics

    • 3965 Words
    • 14 Pages

IntroductionPresupposition is originated in the field of philosophy and it was proposed by German philosopher Ferge in 1892. In the 1960s, presupposition entered the area of linguistics and became a significant concept in semantics. Later in the 1970s, Keenan introduced presupposition to the pragmatics to describe a relation between a speaker and the appropriateness of a sentence in a context (Levinson: 177). Hence, presupposition can be distinguished into two categories: semantic presupposition and pragmatic presupposition. This thesis is mainly centered on the exploration of presupposition in semantics from the perspectives of features and problems of presupposition. For the sake of searching for the solutions to the problems, the writer also brings two pragmatic theories of presupposition into discussion.…

In the Caribbean and specifically in Jamaica, the most accepted language for communication is that language left to us by our European colonisers. The pidgin that developed from the contact of the African slaves and European masters later developed into their own individual languages (or Creoles). They (the elite in society) shun these languages as inappropriate or inadequate for public and sometimes even private use. This notion is widely accepted by even those who can speak nothing else but the Creole. It has fed belief that the use of the Creole, in Jamaica’s case “patois”, makes one inferior to the users of Jamaican Standard English.…
