Isopentyl Acetate Synthesis

Crude % Yield Calculation

Reaction:

H2SO4
C2H4O2(aq) + C5H12O(aq) ----> C7H14O2(aq) + H2O(l)

(1 mole of acetic acid reacts with 1 mole of isopentyl alcohol to make 1 mole of isopentyl acetate and 1 mold of water)

Volume of isopentyl alcohol (d=0.809g/mL; MW=88.15g/mol): 2.5mL Moles of isopentyl alcohol: (2.5mL)(0.809g/1mL)(1mol/88.15g) = 0.02294mol

Volume of glacial acetic acid (d=1.06g/mL; MW=60g/mol): 3.5mL Moles of glacial acetic acid: (3.5mL)(1.06g/1mL)(1mol/60g) = 0.06183mol

Therefore, the acetic acid is in excess, which makes the isopentyl alcohol the limiting reagent.

The theoretical yield is:

Molecular weight of isopentyl acetate is 130.19g

(0.02294mol isopentyl alcohol)(1 mol isopentyl acetate/1mol isopentyl alcohol)(130.19g/1mol)=2.9866g

The observed yield is:

Weight of 3mL conical vial: 20.0005g
Weight of 3mL conical vial with crude ester product: 21.6993g
Weight of crude ester product: 1.6988g

Therefore, the crude % yield is:

Crude % yield = (observed/theoretical)x100% = (1.6988g/2.9866g)x100% = 56.88%

Discussion: The synthesized product, isopentyl acetate, is made by the reaction of isopentyl alcohol and glacial acetic acid with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the catalyzing agent. The crude ester produced in lab was isopentyl acetate, because first, the product smelled of bananas and second, the IR spectrum for the product shows that the product is isopentyl acetate. As for the purity of the product, the distillation of the crude ester showed that its boiling point was supposed to be 130°C - 140°C and the boiling points of the impurities that could have been in the crude ester have lower boiling points. Therefore, since the crude product had a boiling point of 124°C, it indicated that there were some impurities in the crude product. When looking at the IR spectrum, it can be seen that there is no spike around 3235cm-1, which

Small samples of acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, cellulose, starch, and caffeine were obtained. These samples were then placed into seperate sets of test tubes that contained water, acetone, or dichloroethane. Solubilities were then tested for each sample in each solution which can be seen in Table 5. Next, four random pills were obtained and weights were taken of each. Each of the pills were grinded up using a separate mortar and pestle.…

The vial was connected to a water condenser and refluxed for 60 min. The cooled mixture was washed with 5% sodium bicarbonate (2 x 1.0 mL). Sodium sulfate was added to the vial and the crude ester was removed and transferred to a clean vial. The vial was sealed and allowed to stand for 48 hr at rt. The clear liquid was distilled using a Hickman still and hot plate. The purified ester was removed from the still head to yield isopentyl acetate (0.29 g, 25%) and observed as a clear liquid. bp 140°C (lit1 142°C).…

The theoretical yield of isobutyl acetate was calculated to be 1.2545 grams. The actual yield was 0.3434 grams, as a result of 27.37 % yield. The percent yield was found low due the human’s errors, for example when we were transferred product from one glassware to another and also the process of extraction. Isobutyl acetate was clearly found alcoholic beverages, for example fruits, brandies and fortified…

Isopentyl acetate is prepared by the direct esterification of acetic acid with isopentyl alcohol. Since the equilibrium does not favor the formation of the ester, it must be shifted to the right, in favor of the product , by using an excess of one of the starting materials. Acetic acid is used in excess because it is less expensive than isopenthyl alcohol and more easily removed from the reaction mixture…

Isopentyl alcohol, glacial acid sulfuric acid is added to a 25 milliliter round bottom flask and attached to the reflux apparatus. The mixture was boiled, the extracted first using water followed by aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The mixture was dried using anhydrous granular sodium sulfate. After dried, the sample was placed in a distillation apparatus and heated. This resulted in 1.8g of pure isopentyl acetate, a 44% yield.…

Abstract. In this experiment an assigned Ester is prepared, particularly n-Propanol. The Preparation was done via Fischer reaction. In this reaction, a reflux set-up is required. The reflux set-up was used in the liquid-liquid extraction. After adding an immiscible solution to the compound containing n-Propanol, the mixture now will have two layer: the Organic and Aqueous layer. The organic layer is the extract needed and its % yield is computed resulting to 58.3%…
