Islam and Business Ethics
Islam places its highest emphasis on ethical values, and the moral codes taught by the Quran and demonstrated by Muhammad are numerous and comprehensive; therefore, it is important to define what ethics is. Ethics may be defined as a set of moral principles that distinguishes the differences between right and wrong (Renaissance.com on ‘Business Ethics’). Because the decisions people make are not always black and white, especially in business, the Quran specifically identifies the issues that may arise in a person’s life. Generally, the Quran does not prohibit or replace existing practices, but rather consists of regulations or moral guidance that limits certain behavior. Islam gives complete freedom to economic enterprise, which corresponds to its encouragement of hard work to earn one’s living. However, this freedom is restricted by set of commercial rules, and requires Muslims in the profession to practice it with a sense of responsibility. Muhammad, the prophet of God, was chosen at age 40 to be His last prophet and messenger at the age of 40, and before that he had been very involved in commerce. He had a good reputation as a hardworking, honest, and successful businessman (Theislamicworkplace.com on ‘Business Ethics’). Because Muslims follow the Sunna, the normative behavior of the prophet, good business is encouraged in Islam.
The Quran specifically addresses certain behavior in business transactions that must be demonstrated and also behavior that is prohibited. The Quran states that a person should “not devour one another’s property wrongfully, nor throw it before the judges in order to devour a portion of other’s property sinfully and knowingly” (2:188) (Renaissance.com on ‘Business Ethics’). It prohibits people to attain property illegally and states that one should only attain property through legitimate means.     Documents 1 and 2 go from 620 CE to around 70 CE, the perception on Document 1, merchants from a Christian standpoint was very negative, while Document 2, Islam was very positive. Document 1, from the Christian Bible is quoting something that Jesus says.     From a review of the 7 documents presented, it is clear that Christianity and Islam condemned inequitable trade, which led to many Christians and Muslims to look down upon merchants; however, honest business, especially as a merchant, is honored highly. In fact, the Qur'an compares fair merchants to martyrs which were some of the holiest people of all [D2]. However, many Christian and Muslim believers found most merchants to be dishonest and greedy. A Christian scholar describes a merchant's job and then concludes that when a person sells something for more than it is worth, it is "unjust and unlawful" [D4]. An influential Muslim scholar ventured to say that "flattery, and evasiveness, litigation and disputation" were all characteristic of a merchant's profession [D5]. Even common people, like a Christian mother scolds her own son, a merchant, for being greedy [D6]. Muslim law, as time went one, continued to allowed merchants to trade, but some instances of trade were rebuked by whole towns [D7]. Many encouraged generosity and viewed a merchant turning from his profession as a good thing as seen in Godric's life, who was a merchant and then devoted his life to charity and solitude [D3].     Religious documents in each religion reflect their separate views on wealth. In Christianity, its first century genesis held a negative view of the merchant class, stated by Jesus himself. (doc 1) This source is just a single statement from Christian scripture and making a more thorough argument on the religion’s views on wealth and merchants would require additional religious documentation. However, Islam was created in the seventh century and treated the idea of wealth and the merchant class with honor. (doc 2) Similar to Christianity, further passages acquired from the Koran would be necessary in order to give a complete view of Islam’s view on the issue of wealth.     At their origins, Christians and Muslims had different views about merchants and traders. This can be seen in the first two documents which are excerpts from the holy books of the two faiths. “A rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God“(Document 1, Christian Bible, New Testament.) This excerpt from the document can be clarified as bias because it means for a rich man to enter the presence of god, it is near to impossible—countless people may not believe so and disagree. The Christian bible uses a parable to compare riches to the kingdom of God. Wealth turns into greed and if one is obsessive to riches and has possession of greed, they may not be able to reach heaven. Reginald, monk of Durham and colleague of St. Godric, says not to follow the life if a husbandman, but rather to study, learn and exercise the rudiment of more subtle conceptions.     It seems in document six as if Christians were being encouraged to trade as long as it involved God. Religious paintings of Our Lady were being asked for, therefore Christians now want people to trade. Also in document six it is stated that, “You know God has granted you to acquire great riches in this world, may He be praised.” It is now expected for Christian merchants to trade and use God while doing so.
