Isdn vs. Cable Modems
ISDN vs. Cable Modems

1.0 Introduction

The Internet is a network of networks that interconnects computers around the world, supporting both business and residential users. In 1994, a multimedia
Internet application known as the World Wide Web became popular. The higher bandwidth needs of this application have highlighted the limited Internet access speeds available to residential users. Even at 28.8 Kilobits per second (Kbps)— the fastest residential access commonly available at the time of this writing— the transfer of graphical images can be frustratingly slow.

This report examines two enhancements to existing residential communications infrastructure: Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and cable television networks upgraded to pass bi-directional digital traffic (Cable Modems). It analyzes the potential of each enhancement to deliver Internet access to residential users. It validates the hypothesis that upgraded cable networks can deliver residential Internet access more cost-effectively, while offering a broader range of services.

The research for this report consisted of case studies of two commercial deployments of residential Internet access, each introduced in the spring of
1994:

· Continental Cablevision and Performance Systems International (PSI) jointly developed PSICable, an Internet access service deployed over upgraded cable plant in Cambridge, Massachusetts;

· Internex, Inc. began selling Internet access over ISDN telephone circuits available from Pacific Bell. Internex's customers are residences and small businesses in the "Silicon Valley" area south of San Francisco, California.

2.0 The Internet

When a home is connected to the Internet, residential communications infrastructure serves as the "last mile" of the connection between the home computer and the rest of the computers on the Internet. This section describes the Internet technology involved in that connection. This section does not discuss other aspects of Internet

    Butler’s Information Resources department played a major role in establishing the new VoIP system at Butler University. The IS department began this entire project by first researching the current system at Butler and identifying what they currently had, and what they needed. They looked at the features provided by Centrex and how their current system worked and developed a plan of what they needed to improve and add to their system. Butler’s IS department researched other systems, listened to vendor presentations, and set up interviews with numerous potential providers in order to narrow down their decision of what system they would be installing. The IS department came across a system called VoIP that was extremely intriguing to them. Although it was a fairly new and expensive system, they saw it as an opportunity to improve their current system drastically. “Only twelve to thirteen percent of the market had VoIP installed in 2004. Even though the telecommunications landscape was changing with an emerging trend of increasing IP lines, the current statistics were still daunting and left us wondering if this was a good path to…

    Waking up to the sound of the waves crashing, vendors on the beach are offering fresh cold coconuts; children are playing in the warm, equatorial water. The beach is serene and quiet compared to the wild parties of the night before. The sun is warming; the world is coming alive and the day beginning. You walk a little further and accommodate your route to avoid the build up of smashed bottles in the sand. A homeless man lies ahead of you. A plastic bag washes up on the shore along with a dead blowfish.…

    The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2015 voted to change the definition of broadband internet from 4 Mbps to 25 Mbps download speed and changed the upload speed to 3 Mbps from 1Mbps (Pramuk, 2015). First, let me start off by explaining what internet neutrality is. Some of our broadband internet provider if not all want to charge companies like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and other media streaming services more for the speed at which they stream their content to us the consumers for these services. For content to stream to your end device without lag, buffering, and the quality of resolution it takes a certain amount of transmitted data speed to make that happen to receive it in a manner that you consider nothing less than acceptable. So if they do not pay for premium data speeds our quality of services can suffer immensely. However, if they do pay more for faster data speeds we can expect our subscriptions rates to go up as well to help offset…

    Advantages- The biggest advantage is cost. In many buildings there is cabling, PBX equipment, telephones, equipment rooms, and staff to engineer, maintain, budget, plan, manage change, etc., to support the voice infrastructure. Then there is cabling, routers, switches, computers, equipment rooms and staff to engineer, maintain, plan budgets, plan strategy, manage change, etc., to support the data infrastructure. If these two environments, voice and data, could be provided over the same infrastructure, the savings would be immense. Moving voice and data services to a common network allows enterprises to access data faster. Another benefit is efficiency. Network convergence enables management of multiple protocols throughout the data center from a centralized management console. Network convergence fully complements virtualization initiatives and provides the foundation for a truly agile end-to-end infrastructure.…
