When you are writing descriptively, you may want to incorporate figurative language into your essay. These devices promote imagery and elevate your prose. The following exercise will show how a variety of rhetorical devices are used in writing. You will then be comfortable adding this kind of strategy to your observation essay.…
In this essay “How to Read Like a Writer” Mike Bunn, claims that college students should distinguish choices the writer made and decide whether they want to implement them in their writing; enhancing their level of writing. Bunn explains that reading like a writer is a strategy that questions, analyses and criticizes a text to make readers look at the structure, the style, the word choice in regards to several factors like: the purpose, the audience, and the genre. The author concludes that this strategy will also signal the writer’s argument. The essay ends by providing a step-by-step example to obtain structural analysis and familiarize students with this strategy.…
I 100% agree that Asimov’s argument is true. In our first unit, we learned and researched the events of my generation and analyzed how those events shaped our generation. It is very likely that the next generation will be the way they are due to Gen Z events such as the legalization of same-sex marriage and the legalization of medical marijuana. Our influence on the next generation will reflect on them. This has been proven easily from Generation X. The divorce rates in the 60s-70s have greatly influenced my generation’s social. Many children (about 25%) are raised by one parent. That large portion of single parents did not come from nowhere. Before the 60s and 70s, divorce was seen as a taboo, or something that rarely happened.Girls and Women…

Objective: For this essay, you will be analyzing Erik Larson’s style, revealing what devices he uses to convey his message(s) to his readers. The majority of the paper should be comprised of detailed close readings that analyze how his use of language contributes to an overall effect on the reader. Feel free to draw evidence from your journal (but don’t do so blindly, without considering if there are better options! You may end up taking only general ideas from the journal.). Your analysis should show real depth and insight, going beyond the obvious, and beyond what we have discussed in class. Your paper should also show an awareness of the entire novel. Focusing only on one section may hopelessly distort your analysis.…

Many authors, critics, and everyday social readers define Ernest Hemingway as the prime example of 20th century American literature. Hemingway’s works transcend time itself, so that even readers today analyze and criticize his works. His works, of course, have drawn praises and animosity from all corners of the globe. Critics often applause Hemingway on his short simple prose, for which many people recognize him for. His writing builds upon the masterful usage of “short, simple words and short, simple sentences” (Wagner, 3) to create clear and easy to understand pieces of art, so that even the simple everyday reader can enjoy his art. One may even say that “no other novelist … [has] had an equivalent influence on the prose” of today’s modern writing (Young, 39). Naturally, while supporters exist, so do the debunkers. They say that Hemingway’s prose “is too limited … [making his] characters mute, insensitive, uncomplicated men (Weeks, 1)” in society. The simplicity of his writing strips away the information that a reader may interpret, which fuels the debate that Hemingway utilizes no creativity in his writings; everything simply presents itself as it truly represents.…
Ernest Hemingway’s writing choices are famously in favor of clear and concise language, sharply contrasting those of William Faulkner, an author who is known to use many fluid descriptions, metaphors, and similes in order to emphasize certain ideas. Although both Faulkner and Hemingway choose to describe more than just what is plainly written, they differ immensely in presentation. Faulkner adheres strictly to his own tradition of using powerful language to give his stories a strong tone, as if spoken by a descriptive storyteller. Hemingway on the other hand describes his stories impartially, avoiding bias towards one character or another, and instead telling things the way they are (or rather, the way he creates them to be). Hemingway’s tone, style, and diction in “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” is presented in a plain and unbiased fashion that allows its reader to capture exactly what Hemingway intends to say.…
Zinsser includes examples of clutter, “Clutter is the ponderous euphemism that turns a slum into a depressed socioeconomic area, a salesman into a marketing representative and garbage collectors into waste disposal personnel” (Zinsser 14). Zinsser has made me realize how much I use additional words and phrases that serve no purpose to my writing and can be taken out. This is an important lesson to consider while writing, since I know that while writing a formal paper, I try to sound more professional by adding sophisticated phrases and…

The last of Professor Roberts’ recommendations is the importance of using “colorful, colored and colorless words.” Using colorful words paints the reader a picture and describes a subject further, although sometimes there may be no need to do so. Colored words are words that everyone can associate with, or would have mutual feelings towards. These include certain people, places or things anyone can relate to. Writers must be careful when using words that lack a strong…
