Is This the “Big One”?
Tourists are strolling down Hollywood Boulevard and snapping pictures of the various stars. Suddenly, the ground begins jerking and trembling. One minute they were standing on solid ground. The next, it feels like the earth is crumbling beneath their feet. Glass shatters to the ground, and the road begins to crack. Smoke starts to darken the sky. What is happening? It’s obvious – an earthquake. The highly populated Los Angeles metropolitan area is surrounded by a large complex network of thrust and strike-slip faults. To the northern edge lies the Sierra Madre-Cucamonga thrust fault system. To the north and east are the San Jacinto and San Andreas right-lateral strike-slip fault systems. Studies have shown that California’s earthquake zones are more complex and lethal than once thought.
Southern California lies on four major faults: San Andreas, San Jacinto, Sierra Madre, and the Cucamonga fault. The San Jacinto and San Andreas faults are right-lateral strike-slip fault systems; the two sides move in opposite, horizontal directions along the fault plane. If someone looked across the fault on one side, the opposite side of the fault would have appeared to move to the right. The Sierra Madre-Cucamonga fault system is a thrust fault; the sides push towards each other. The San Jacinto fault is composed of a “complex zone of splaying and overlapping strike-slip fault segments, steps and bends, and associated zones of contractional and extensional deformation” (Dorsey). One of its major fault interactions includes “triggering of co-seismic slip on northwest-striking right-lateral faults by slip on northeast-striking left-lateral faults” (Dorsey). The San Andreas Fault is the main fault of a complex fault network along the coastal California region. The fault contains “a system of four secondary faults adjacent to the main San Andreas” fault (Lovgren). The main source of evacuating people out of the city was a ferry provided for free. Since they didn’t have many freeways and bridges there was not many ways t evacuate beside the ferries. Comparing this to a future earthquake waiting to happen such as the San Andreas fault, it is going to be much more difficult to evacuate when that earthquake hits. The earthquake will destruct many of the freeways, bridges, and on-ramps. Previous earthquakes have shown us that those types of structures are vulnerable to the shaking. This means that trying to evacuate the city by car will be almost impossible and since we are not located right next to the ocean means that evacuating will put us in a dilemma.…

    Los Angeles was built on a myriad of transform faults that include Santa Monica fault, the San Fernando fault, and Northridge/Santa Barbara fault. Even though these faults are not as well-known as the San Andreas Fault, where it margins are between the Pacific and North American plates that cross Southern California. Los Angeles is sitting near at least 60 known faults. The earth still moves frequently in these smaller less known areas. One example of this is the earthquake that was focused in the Northridge area happened in January 1994. It only lasted 30 seconds registering at 6.7 on the Richter scale but the aftershocks lasted for several days afterwards. Ground displacement is the second hazard main of earthquakes. Especially if there is a building or roadway on or near the fault line. This quake alone killed 60 people, and injuring thousands. It also caused fires and an explosion in the Granada Hills area, causing many buildings and freeways to collapse. There were also many homes left without power or water.…

However, despite the high risk of hazards it is a very desirable place to live because of its relaxed lifestyle and natural beauty. The population is growing mainly due to immigration which means that cities such Los Angeles are becoming more vulnerable. The Philippines is a Newly Industrialised Country (NIC) and has low to middle income of US$5000 per capita. Although it is only a small group of islands, the population is huge at 91 million (over twice the size of California's). Both California and the Philippines lie on plate boundaries and therefore both suffer from tectonic hazards. As with all plate boundaries, friction often builds up between the plates also causing regular earthquakes which can sometimes result in tsunamis as well. In the Philippines earthquakes have multiple impacts. This is partly to do with the physical geography of the land. Being a group of islands means that the epicentres of the earthquakes are often in the sea, which increases the likelihood of tsunamis. It is also very mountainous inland which means many areas are vulnerable to landslides. One earthquake in 2006 triggered landslides, a flood and a local tsunami 3 feet high.     There are also secondary effects that can be a disastrous to Los Angeles like faulting and ground ruptures, aftershocks, and fires. Earthquakes originate from the sudden movement of faults. As the faults move, in any direction, the blocks of rock on both sides of the fault will rub against each other and that cause the vibrations. The more the faults move, the larger the amount and intensity of vibrations in the earthquake will be.
