Is Slavery Right Or Wrong
During the time of slavery pro-slavery southerner’s pushed the bible to defend the institution of American slavery. Defenders of slavery believed they had every right to keep slavery going and used excerpts from the bible to their benefit. Defenders of slavery attempted to show that slavery was morally right, and said slavery was given approved by God himself. Although defenders of slavery may have reasons to make slavery seem not so bad, slavery was taking away basic human rights from men and women, and pro-slavery southerner’s had no right to display evidence from the bible. The bible does display evidence of slavery throughout, but slavery during this time was unjust and quite different from times in the bible. A slave is someone who is …show more content…
God determines what is right and wrong, and interpreting text from the Bible to make slavery not seem bad is wrong. Pro-slavery Southerner’s used everything they could to make slavery something that wasn’t frowned upon. Several Christian church fathers forbid slavery under their control and used their resources to free them. In my view, many preachers and leaders in the south took scripture out, context to justify their view of slavery. If I knew what I know now I would have stood up for the freedom of slaves. All people are made in the image of God and in God’s eyes we are all equal. If I was a Christian in the south during slavery, I would have argued for the freedom of slaves with the use of the Bible and tradition to show that all men are created equal. I would support the Abolitionist movement go fight slavery by helping slaves escape from their owners and help them to freedom by transporting them and providing short-term shelter. In addition, I would try to use my monetary resources and other Christians’ resources to purchase their freedom. All people deserve the same rights no matter what race. Since so many slave owners were Christians I would have reached out to the church and held meetings with church leaders and preachers to discuss the issue of

If slaves were free, white Southerners would see their fortunes decline. White Southerners depended on slaves to endure harsh working conditions and strenuous labor that they were not willing to do. They needed a way to rationalize cruelty in order to maintain their business. In their defense of slavery, they attempted to show ownership of people had been going on since Biblical times. If you strictly believe in the words of the Bible, white businessmen could point to those words to prove that the Bible sanctions slavery, albeit in a convoluted way. It seems to me that they were thinking that some form of slavery has existed since the beginning of time. Consequently, the Bible is used in an alternative way to explain why slavery should…

“The Christian religion, by nature itself, cries out against the state of slavery”(Abraham Lincoln ).In the book Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl the slaves were trying to see a path to freedom by the religion they wanted to forget the dark path of slavery, and eventually they found a path to freedom with religion. Harriet jacobs talks about how slavery and church was connected and her thoughts when she saw what was going on. She saw that the slaveholders were using religion to trick the slaves into obeying their masters and not killing them. Slaves used it as hope and to free their pain of slavery.…

Slave owners described their slaves as barbaric people who needed a guide during their life. The lives of black people equaled that of no white person. Christian Americans believed enslaving blacks continued the social spectrum of society which predated America. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians owned slaves. Americans were no different than any other society before them. Slaves were property and thus not entitled to their own salvation. Salvation came though their masters. David Walker’s Appeal created controversy for white Christians, challenged their motives for…

Anti-slavery supporters propose the question: where in the Bible does it say that negroes are inferior and subject to slavery? The American Anti-Slavery Society searched the Bible to find out that every American who owns a slave is a “man-stealer.” People should never be forced to be “bought and sold like cattle.” Slaves question how ministers can preach a gospel of peace then turn around and whip a negro woman until her back…

Texas, whether it was being in the south or not, was in favor of using slaves. Texans believed they had a higher standing than the African Americans and should be used for their prosperity. After all, God was favoring whites, right? “That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race… is mutually beneficial to both bond(slave) and free, and is… justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator.”(B). All white men were entitled to equal rights, but African Americans “mutually” received that right only because the white claimed the Lord favored them, that didn’t make sense to me because we were all…

Another claim made by the wealthy slave-owners was that God instituted slavery. These same men often reference the Bible, quoting many verses they deem supportive of their argument. While there were servants in biblical times, we can infer that this same God would not have encouraged the prejudice that took place in the pre-Civil War era. The peculiar institution of the…

Abolitionists of the North argued against slavery by presenting moral arguments against it and bringing more attention to the cruelty of the issue. However, Southerners defended slavery by stating that slavery was mentioned numerous times in the Bible. As the Christian belief in unity of the human race, Abolitionists believed that their attacks on slavery were “a vindication of Christianity, moral accountability, and the unity of mankind” (Davis 130). Some Northerners argued that “slavery was sinful in itself” (Margaret 164). Many writings attempted to show the harsh conditions of slavery to bring attention to the issue.…

From 1830’s, to overcome this problem, many American people started to think of a solution, and during 1840 and 1850, they argued about whether the slavery was rights or wrongs. After that, Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president during Civil War, and then he made the famous Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 -declaring “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free” (qtd. in William). - This proclamation was followed by the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1865 outlawing slavery (Jellaroo, 2012). Because of many people’s effort, various races includes black people could get the citizenship in the United States presently, and the rule of dividing car by races was prohibited,…

The most direct and strongest challenge to the claim that the Bible sanctioned slavery as it was practiced in the American South was put forward by the abolitionist Elijah Porter Barrows in the nineteenth century religious publication Bibliotheca Sacra. In this 1862 publication, Barrows asserted that unlike the institution of slavery in the American South, the biblical institution of slavery was not based on the inferiority of one race. Barrows argued that this was the case in both the Old and New Testaments. Unfortunately, Barrows argument that biblical slavery in the Old Testament was not based on the inferiority of one race consisted of only a little more than a page and in the case of the New Testament only a few sentences. Nevertheless,…

They twisted the Bible words and made it as though slavery was acceptable when the Bible says in a sense that everyone is equal. Slaves are human beings just like everyone else in the world. They have souls and love each other. Clotel, her sister Althesa, and her mom Currer were all separated from each other in a Negro Sale. Clotel went with a purchaser named Horatio Green, and Althesa and Currer went with Dick Walker. These slaves were all heartbroken because mothers watched their children and husbands get taken from them for forever, and not have that comfort of their loved ones with them. The family is so important to some people and never seeing them again would change lives…
