Is School Trying to Make Us Fail or What?
Is school trying to make us fail or what?

That word.
That one word which makes most students procrastinate.
That one word which teachers are constantly throwing around at the end of every lesson. The word?

Homework.

It may be considered helpful and profound to some people but what is it that makes homework so unappealing and harmful? Maybe it’s the length of time you consume out of your free time or the thought of doing even more work after a tiresome day at school.

Many students are complaining about getting too much school work, that there are too many subjects to focus on, that concentrating on several subjects at once to full perfection is physically impossible with how much time you acquire. Clearly too much studying can lead to stress which could alter your actual goals for the subjects.

However, isn’t that the point? Is it not that the homework concept suppose to challenge the students to know for sure what capabilities the student holds and what limits they can reach? Yes! In fact the teachers are studying the students too, to understand the idea of what level every student should be suited with although they can be tougher as expected just as it should be, challenging. ‘Without experiencing through any pain there would be no gain.’ This means physically and mentally.

Still, who’s to blame for the failures that occur every often when dealing with not just homework but tests, essays, exams, course works even more than that the GCSE courses! The teacher’s to blame or the student?

Learning and self-teaching is where you truly learn how to understand a subject. My maths teacher in yr 7 was horrible, so I had to teach myself just about everything I could and that was through homework and reading the texts books. But then I couldn’t keep this up because it involves a lot of determination which kind of shrunk and got dissolved by each day.

Before jumping to conclusions the main problem between the student and the teacher is that they

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

In reality however, students are pushed to their limits. Many adults think that this is how education is supposed to work; students are to be put under immense pressure of doing well in school to prepare them for work when they are older. But, when students are put under such a large amount of stress, often they find themselves shoveling food down at lunch in order to finish their last minute biology homework or frantically texting someone who has government the class…

It is necessary for a person to want to get rid of a force controlling them. Also, it is commonly known that with growing up, homework should be expected in order to receive a full education. This meaning, every child for twelve years is supposed to make school a priority, and then get an occupation once they are an adult. While I accept this, every student should have the right to pursue other aptitudes which they will use late in life as a career. That being said, homework has caused a great problem in my day to day life.…

Since Roberto Nevilis introduced it to the world as a punishment in 1905, there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade.…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).…

In this pre-cal 11 class, some students are facing a tremendous difficulty because they don’t give this course their best try, and the reason for that may be they don’t understand how important this course is. For a while, I keep receiving some very 'basic' type of questions from few students, which kind of confused me because those questions are not challenging and Ms.Wagner has certainly go over it. My first thought was that they don’t understand the teacher’s interpretation; however, after few sentences of brief explanation, they can figure out the right answer without having me finish my sentence. Later during the class time, while the teacher is teaching, I observe on those students and discovered that they are not tent to listen to the class. They whether day dreaming or dawdling. Those students are very smart, their minds are brilliant; as you can see, some of them are able to figure out the answer with few clues. The only difference between them and those ‘stong’students is that they don’t give the course a try. Therefore, I believe I can draw a conclusion to say that some students are not quite successful is because they don’t know to do the right thing at right time. For these students, it's important to let them know how important math is. So, my strategy is to try to let them deal with some more math application problems that deal with real life situations.…

Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Homework should be reduced because it can interfere with family time and cause tension, it can cause health problems and…

    Bad Study Habit

I’ve been teaching part-time for the past one and a half years. My subjects? Basic business concepts and basic accounting for information technology students. I enjoy what I do and I like my students (so far). That doesn’t mean though that I’m not a strict one. In fact, I have already gained the reputation for strictness and difficulty of exams (I once made my entire class re-take a certain exam because nobody passed!). But hey, a lot of them passed and graduated last April so I guess I wasn’t that bad. Unfortunately, not everyone graduated. One or two of them failed the whole subject (there goes my reputation again). I couldn’t do anything about it because their grade was a solid 5 (which is an F grade here) and no matter how hard I pushed and pulled, I just couldn’t give a remedy for their failing grade. So, bottomline, they did not graduate. Some of my students right now asked me about these failed students. They wanted to know the “whys” and the “hows” for these cases. I tried to answer as tactfully as I can but their questions really got me thinking. Is it them or is it me? Am I not a good teacher or were they simply not good students? Simple answer? More of the latter instead of the former. I’m not kidding. I’m not saying I’m a good one but I’m not that bad either. And from jogging my memory, I can see how they failed and I can count the reasons why they failed. Three words – bad study habits – in plural, not singular. So what are these bad study habits? Let me count 7 of them. Poor Attendance. For any subject, especially accounting, attendance is really a must. Unless, of course, you’re a genius who can just scan your teacher’s or classmates’ notes and you can readily understand the lesson. If you’re not, the next best thing is to…

The purpose of the homework is that it should reinforce ideas, concepts, and knowledge of the subject matter taught. It is necessary in case of teaching a subject such as math, physics or chemistry. Through homework, students should review and practice what they have learned in the classroom, and prepare for the forthcoming lesson. It should offer to the students to study a subject in depth. Homework should let students investigate on their own, and learn how to find answers to questions. It should allow students build, work as a team, on their own time, with their own schedule. So that they can plan out themselves how much effort they need to supply in order to carry out the assignments successfully (Homework: is it worth it?, 2012).…

There is also another problem which is that the gap is present between teacher and pupil. A taught can’t say his own expression to teacher. So, they don’t understand their books and there is produced mass failure.…

Several studies have proven that homework, in fact, does improve the stability of the student in school; this strengthens the statement that time spent completing homework is time well spent. Rather than giving students another hour of leisure time, doing homework entitles the student to an hour of enriched education; this can greatly benefit the student, as consistently finishing homework will reap great rewards such as a favourable test score or report card. Why are we posing such a ludicrous question about the possible abolishment of homework if doing homework is what it takes to succeed in school? It is a common emotion to students regarding the distaste of homework, but legions of teachers know better because they recognize the importance of homework in the success of students in school and outside of school.…
