The act of plagiarism has occurred in many instances, and has changed the way that people learn and develop their own skills. These instances include, but are not limited to essays, tests, and speeches. Plagiarism is wrong in both political and student conduct, because the ideas of others are taken away, and unethically used as an original idea, which should result in major consequences. Plagiarism has been found in numerous speeches delivered by people with political power. In 2013, U.S. Senator Rand Paul was accused of plagiarizing multiple speeches that he had supposedly written by using some of the same language from other sources.     Plagiarism can be defined as using others published ideas or words and representing them as original (Bird, Sivilotti, 2008).Although plagiarism is not a new issue it has grown it the past few years due the increase use of technology. This being due to the escalated amount of material found on the internet with ease and quickly implement into one’s own document (Shenton, 2010). In today’s age plagiarism is more accepted in between students. Most students fail to grasp the concept of properly acknowledging the information from its original source; which they also tend to believe any information found on the internet is free to use (Shenton, 2010). One can argue that there’s has been a value shift which can be questioned, due to the increase in the legitimacy of cheating and plagiarism among college students (Gross, 2011). Research recently done in 2009 states that a shift justifying cheating and plagiarism has been replacing the traditional view of cheating and plagiarism being unethical (Gross, 2011). It seems as university administration are not as aware in this shift as some researchers, although the attention is focused on how to solve this problem cheating continues to increase (Gross, 2011).In another case several students were questioned about their decision making when it comes to plagiarizing: Some said it easy to do; they are confident they won’t get caught or just out of laziness; or they view the assignment as a waste of time or even if they don’t understand the class or topic (Power, 2009). While most students had been told by a professor not to plagiarize; most students themselves did not know how to apply it (Power, 2009). It is indicated that they regarded plagiarism as an ethical issue since it allowed students to obtain marks for work that was not their own and this was unfair to other students. However, they felt that it was difficult to know exactly what constituted plagiarism as they often wrote essays after discussing their ideas with other students or taking detailed notes from reading materials. As a result, it was not easy to identify who actually owns the ideas that were expressed in their writing. Several of the interviewees stated that university regulations on plagiarism where difficult to interpret and no attempt had been made to explain what was acceptable when using the ideas of other authors. Several studies have surveyed students regarding academic misconduct and found that plagiarism is frequently used by students when writing assignments. Some studies have found that the amount of plagiarism taking place over time has increased. Student cheating has garnered much public attention recently. A perception reflected in media accounts is that acts of academic dishonesty among students in college. Plagiarism is not a new phenomenon. However, recent reports in the literature and the popular media have raised and continue to raise concerns about the high incidences of plagiarism in higher education (Times Higher Educational Supplement (THES), 2005a, 2005b, 2004a, 2004b, 2000; Park, 2003). Not only does plagiarism undermine academic integrity and standards, it also denied the principles of intellectual property rights. Equally too, the genuine efforts, the worth and laudable achievement of students who do not plagiarise are seriously undermined by activities of the few who plagiarise.
