Is Mayella Powerful
Introduction. The book, “ To Kill a Mockingbird” has a question, is Mayella powerful? I say she isn’t for countless reason because she is simply in one of the worst situations possible as a person. She only got a small amount of power by setting up a fake rape accusation to an innocent african american man passing by to leave her father, a drunken southern stereotype that sees Tom “Taking advantage” of Mayella by standing perfectly still as she is literally kissing and hugging him. Being the “amazing” stereotype of what the author thinks people in the Southern U.S. are like he chases him away by saying he’ll kill him. Then he beats Mayella, tells the sheriff to find and arrest him, then goes to court the next day. Brilliant character.
In the story “to kill a mockingbird” Mayella is not powerful for she lacks many things in order to bend the will of others, or shape important decisions that will affect someone’s life one way or another without needing someone else to do it for her, like a judge. In the 1930’s she is literally in the second worst situation you could be in. Poorer than the pigs on their lawn, No connections, No friends, No job and is the punching bag for her father, Bob. Mayella seems to think a drunk, hyper-racist man can remember something that isn’t more racism or booze for more than a short time. She can’t convict more men because then she would be arrested for false rape accusations for life. But perhaps he can remember and then stop sexually abusing her, but what about the other forms of abuse. This is not what is going on, it is saying a fault in her plan because it annoyed me beyond
