The Internet is faster and better than ever before, so why go back to old, time-consuming ways, when we have free and ready information at our fingertips? Our school should not participate in “Shut down your screen week” because the internet is more helpful than reading thousands of books just to research one topic. People who use social media are more connected. “Pew Research Center found that the average user of social media has more close ties and is less socially isolated.”(Social Media as Community, Hampton). Without any internet, we wouldn’t be as close with friends and we would be more socially isolated without social media. Users of social media know people from a greater variety of backgrounds. The internet helps us connect with friends, family, and people around all around the world. Without it, we could never reach out to friends or family in other states. If it is such a distraction then why do scientists say that” Internet users showed greater brain activity than nonusers, suggesting they were growing their neural circuitry. Or that people learn best when focused and the internet is a distraction, “ Google contains the world’s best writing, images, and ideas.”( Is Google Making Us Stupid?, Norvig) Are the world’s greatest writing, images, and ideas such as William Shakespeare, Mario Testino, or William James Sidis a distraction?
