Is Google Making USupid Analysis

In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid, Nicholas Carr uses relatable instances and never ending advancements in technology to answer the debate of whether society’s dependence on the internet directly leads to compromised intelligence. With the continuing use of the web in everyday life, people become accustomed to finding information with new technologies, making them more simple minded, but still more informed overall.
Carr starts off his article by mentioning the change in how people read just to find specific details instead of absorbing the information presented to them. He uses Frederick Winslow Taylor’s system of Taylorism to exemplify the fact that productivity in the factory has risen significantly by changing the way employees work. Taylor’s goal was to “[create] a utopia of perfect efficiency” where “the system must be first” (Carr 9). Throughout every industry, this systematic way of production creates a near perfect work ethic. This example illustrates that, like the human mind, physical work can be programmed and enforced to create the ideal workplace. Taylorism, although intended for physical labor, is now establishing itself in the human mind as the internet spews out information best suited for the user. By constantly manipulating itself through many algorithms to administer certain information and using Taylor’s ethic, “Google is doing … the work of the mind” (Carr 9). As a user searches for information, Google processes it’s data to give the best response to the search, which makes the whole process quicker, allowing the viewer to move on to the next search. This universal method of acquiring information is much more progressive than the antiquated way of searching through encyclopedias to find data, causing people to lose the ability to read through texts to draw answers. It is inevitable that there will always be changes in technology that makes acquiring information more efficient, so instead of blaming the advancements I think it is more fair to blame society. We are the users of the internet and choose to use the web to obtain information, using the easy way out, instead of taking the time to look through book after book to gain knowledge; we are the only ones to blame. Since the internet is today’s universal medium of reading, we have become accustomed to finding out important news and facts through the web and because of this, people have become more informed of the world holistically. Through twitter and news apps like CNN, I have been able to keep up with world relations and have been able to research further on specific details that I read. The apps allow society to be informed about what is really going on in other countries without any filter, creating a well informed community within these apps. In my opinion, it is important to be aware of situations in other countries and in our controversial political system to be able to have solid opinions about them.
