Is anger management the key to resolving bullying in today's schools
Over the past decade there have been a total of 874,184 recorded cases of bullying in the Caribbean. This is according to Child helpline. When people hear the term ‘bullying’ they tend to think only about an act of violence done unto another child. A group of very influential people in Trinidad and Tobago claims that they have found the key to bullying in the nation’s schools and have started an anger management programme. While anger management seems to be a problem that needs rectifying also there are much more than just anger management that needs to be put in place in order to curb this horrific epidemic called bullying.
Let us now take a closer look at this hideous crime called bullying. What exactly is bully? According to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological aggressive behaviour by a person or group directed towards a less powerful person or group that is intended to cause harm, distress or fear. Bullying takes places in a lot of different forms in the school system. It ranges from as early as Kindergarten and then goes on to Primary school and then Secondary school if not corrected as soon as possible.
What contributes to bullying? Bullying stems from households where children are either neglected or have their own way all the time. The ones that come from neglected homes or broken families, bullying becomes a way of life for them. They do it in order to survive, some people may call it survival mode. Being a bully does not mean that you poor or less fortunate however because the other kind of bullies are formed by children having their own way all the time. When they are home their parents give them anything they want and let them have their own way but when they come out into the real world and they realize that they can not always have what they want they turn to bullying to get it. Sometimes parents believe that by affording their children with more than they need
