Is America Really Free Essay
Freedom is the single most well known attribute of our great nation. But just how free are we really? I would argue that America is one of the freest countries in the world, though it could be freer. The rights and freedom described in the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights, as compared with what current society actually allows creates many different pictures of freedom from several perspectives.
The many documents that became the foundation of American “freedom” support the idea that America is free. One of the most well known lines of the Declaration of Independence claims we have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. The first point is the simplest. That brings up a very interesting subject, because the stereotype of anarchy is violent riots and fearful living, so if that’s true freedom, is it even a good thing to be completely free? It is true that to be free from everything would be to live in anarchy, however, this is a different type of freedom. Anarchy freedom releases restraints for individuals, which are often there for good reason, while American freedom focuses on enabling all people to achieve things as a whole, and protecting their rights as opposed to giving them more. American laws ideally allow as much freedom as possible without compromising the rights of others. In conclusion, the controversial topic of freedom in America may never be agreed upon completely, but no one can deny that America is one of the freest nations on Earth, though it could use some improvements. Massive amounts of evidence support both sides, so the only logical place to land is in the middle. America is both very free and not free
