Some people think that it is a bad idea to replace tablets with textbooks and some other people think it is a good idea. There can be many opinions over this topic, so let’s explain why we shouldn’t have them replace our textbooks. The first reason that we shouldn’t have them is because if you lose them it’s it will have a critical impact on school. One of the reasons it could have an impact is because we could lose everything you had on it. Not only that but they also cost a lot of money. If we keep the normal textbooks it will save money over time because they last longer than normal devices, and not only that they are a lot cheaper. The textbook might break but they are not that expensive to replace.Another factor with the tablet is that…

We live in an era where a myriad of gadgets and gizmos are available for our everyday convenience. A time where people are willing to line up outside of an Apple store for a $750 phone or a group of distraught adults that are ready to murder one another in a Walmart for the latest electronics their children want for Christmas; is this the ideal use for high technology? Kids nowadays will have these high technologies to either benefit their learning experience or have their education meet its demise. The 21st century is a remarkable time where everything is changing from tradition to technology. This has a profound effect on our youth and will have a greater effect on future generations. These times will shape the future generations for either a technology-reliant generation or shape and mold the future of tradition. The effect of young people having technology is overly apparent to teachers and their parents. Their kids get bored with things they loved to do as kids. The difference is they have television and many other technologies growing up that have shaped their minds into being entertained. If they are not they will ignore, throw fits or simply not learn from the experience. Neil Postman warns in his book Amusing Ourselves to Death that education presented as entertainment undermines tradition. Traditions like learning from your teacher instead of an online application. Traditions like learning from the outside world around you by exploring it instead of digitally exploring the internet. Today teachers are attempting to turn technology into learning devices but much like Postman’s “rear-view mirror thinking”, the iPad and related devices are used for entertainment. The impact technologies like the iPad and iPod and introducing video games for “educational benefit” are not helping them socially, emotionally or educationally as much as harming them.…

Giving a developing child an iPad for classroom learning is harmful because it pulls away from activities that develop children’s social skills. Children seek to learn new information; whether they ask the age old question “why?”, or talk to anybody who will listen, children learn from the things around them. With advancing technology, iPads and phones, children are more involved with technology rather than growing their life needed skills. “We’ve recovered six full school days’ through our iPod and iPad use…elementary students have been using...math apps to refresh their skills as they transition from recess to class” (D’Orio). This is a great example of how communication is being ignored during the school day. Kids in the Generation X and Generation Y loved recess. It was a time of the day that one could play with all their friends and not have to focus or worry about school, just be a kid and run and play. Now that iPads are allowed in the school, students are giving up their time of interaction with other students…

Ipad’s are a great way of incorporating technology into education in the 21st century. However, for this to work effectively professional development should be conducted. Trainings should include applications on the ipad that ensure learning objectives align with content standards, not just for fun. Teachers need to learn how to create well-designed and meaningful activities that promote student learning and align with curriculum/state standards in order to assure successfulness, therefore becoming scholars in their area of study yet again. They are becoming professionals in using ipads effectively. Studies have shown that this type of technology is useful with students who have communication disorders and/or visual impairments. This generation has known of iPads, iPhones, and all of the apps that come along with it. I will use technology as an advantage in my classroom to teach my students because they can download the same apps at home to get more practice. As teachers I think it is important to use resources that are relevant to the students. I will not have a classroom that is solely based around computers and tablets because I believe that books provide important information as well. Students can not be in front of a screen 24/7 so I will encourage and enforce time in the day when there will be very little or no…
